When do you "take the hint" with an unresponsive vendor?

Violet, on May 18, 2020 at 10:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 5

I have began my search for a florist for our Spring 2021 wedding. I had this local florist in mind who books up pretty early and is well known. I have always wanted them from day one. I had a phone consultation on 4/23/20 due to Covid and it went AMAZING! She heard my vision and was taking words out of my mouth it was a match made in Heaven! She said she thought we would be a great fit and that her style was right up my alley and she would get us a proposal in 2-3 days.

On 4/25 she sent me an email that said she was uploading a proposal and mood-board to HoneyBook by the evening. Nothing got uploaded... I waited a week and then assumed they got swamped due to Mother's Day coming up and they were running on less hours due to Covid. So I waited until after Mother's Day and sent a check in email on 5/11 saying I understand if they are busy but just wanted to check if the proposal was ready so I could secure the date. She emailed back the next day saying she was "uploading shortly".

Here it is almost the 19th and I have yet to hear anything. I've gotten quotes from other places at this point but really had my heart set on this on florist from the beginning and the connection we had sealed the deal for me, but now I'm worried. My budget is $2,500 BUT I admitted I was flexible to create my vision and she said that was very realistic for what I wanted and said they work with all budgets.

My question is should I take the ghosting as a hint that they may no longer want to work together? Maybe because my budget may not be a lucrative as others? Or am I jumping the gun? My mom and FMIL say it's unprofessional and I should probably just book with one of my other choices but I don't want to do that and then hear back and have remorse.... Thanks for reading my rant! Anything helps!!

I didn’t waste time on vendors who couldn’t communicate. Everything is online now so if it’s been more than 5 business days I would move on. I wanted to make sure I hired vendors who were reliable. Btw every vendor who didn’t get back to me within a week never got back to me.

I think it’s really unprofessional, and I personally wouldn’t book with them. Yes, things are a bit out of the ordinary right now, but that’s no reason to not come through on sending you something that was promised weeks ago. To me, they aren’t showing that they want your business that bad. Other vendors would definitely be more attentive to you, especially in these strange times. Best wishes as you continue to plan!

I absolutely agree with your mother and FMIL. They are being unprofessional and they're behavior is likely indicative of how they will behave in the future. If this is how they behave when you haven't booked with them, I wouldn't expect their communication to improve after you've signed a contract.

I appreciate the advice ladies! I decided to weigh my options a bit more and ended up finding an amazing florist who got back with me for a proposal SAME DAY! They made me feel so valued and I booked ASAP! Funny enough, the other florist emailed me RIGHT after. Like within an hour or two of me saying I had found a better fit vendor for my needs and expressed I wasn't feeling my patronage was being valued.

Follow your gut. If you're having doubts, move on. Your mental health is more important.
