When are there too many activities?

Laura, on October 9, 2016 at 10:48 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 37

We went to a lovely wedding last night - lots to eat, open bar, all the good stuff!

In addition to drinks and dancing they had a photo booth, "casino night" set-up, ping pong, board games (Jenga, Scattergories, etc.) and raffles (tickets earned by winning games not by giving money). It was incredible and I was very impressed. But no one was on the dance floor at all, gals who wanted to dance were prying their guys from the casino. The crowd wasn't very big, and with all the activity in different rooms, everyone was dispersed and separate.

Curious as to what people's thoughts are on the number of activities at a wedding? Such a thing as too many?

Personally, I don't believe games belong at weddings at all.

I agree with @A.L.C. I think if it's a wedding where lots of kids are going to be there, maybe a small game or two would be okay. But other than that, I think casino games on top of the photobooth and dancing is a bit much.

It sounds like they took every pinterest idea and ran with it. I think one "gimmick" is ok along with the standard food/bar/dancing combo. Photobooth OR caricature artist OR casino, etc. As much as I love board games, having them at a wedding is weird to me.

I don't think there can ever be too many, especially if I'm a guest and it's been paid for lol.

I also think games are weird at a wedding. It's too much to try and cram into a 3-4 hour time slot. @Pushing is right...have one but not all.

Well despite this probably being unpopular on here I'm going to go ahead and say I recently decided to add some games. Going to bring some card games and dice. I have many kids and some older people that likely won't dance at all. Think it's a good way to entertain and keep people there. I'm not a big dancer either...so I don't see the harm in it.

Personally, I would want my guests having a great time in one area: the dance floor! That has been my concern with our bar area and photobooth on the patio of our venue. I'm afraid everyone will congregate out there and no one be on the dance floor inside!

@MyBBLife - same! I'm all about the dance floor.

@Wendy I definitely understand adding games if your crowd isn't interested too much in dancing. Just not overloading on the activities where there is too much going on and people are widely spread apart.

Even if you have guests who don't like dancing, I think having games sort of cheapens the whole thing. I guess it depends on the ambiance, but what happened to being able to have a conversation with someone?

It depends on the theme they were going for? If it was like a Hollywood/Vegas theme, then I can see it. Thankfully, it wasn't a boring wedding, there was something for everyone. I personally would want to be on the dance floor and the photobooth the entire night.

For my wedding? Not so much on all those things, but it sounds super fun to go as a guest!

That was one thing my FH and I decided against. We want everyone to dance and enjoy the DJ that we are paying so much for! We recently went to a family member's wedding at a casino and after dinner the room cleared out and the DJ was playing music for no one becuase everyone went to the casino! BUST!

I'd rather have people dancing. We are doing a photobooth but that's it!

I'm getting married in Vegas so I am just feeding our guests and letting the city entertain them.

That sounds fun but more like a charity event than a wedding. I like dancing at weddings. I think a photo booth is enough and even that's not necessary.

I'm not against the idea of games at a wedding. I think one or two but I wouldn't want an empty dance floor.

I can probably count on one hand how many people who would actually dance at my wedding. With that said, only a few more than them would be willing to play games which is why I'm having such a short wedding/reception.

Games scream birthday party to me. Not for weddings.
