When and where to take wedding party photos?

In my life I’ve only been to two weddings both at the same church just several years apart. My first wedding I attended was my aunts I was 3 and a flower girl. I remember before we joined everyone at the reception hall that the bridal party made a stop somewhere with lots of grass to takes the pictures of the bridal party. Some shots had just the bride and groom and then the bride groom and their kid, then the bride and her bridesmaids then the bride, bridesmaids and the flower girls. Same for the groom. Well when exactly do you do those photos because I definitely want to have pictures of my wedding party. Is it possible to do if the ceremony and reception are in the same location?
