What's with the Sweetheart neckline epidemic?

Alabaster, on June 6, 2013 at 4:41 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

Hi Ladies, I am having trouble finding a dress and my wedding is in 4 months! I live in NYC and 90% of the dresses I have seen have Sweetheart necklines, which I don't like as they remind me of prom dresses. I am also not keen on v-necks. I prefer scoop, or portrait, Queen Anne necklines. Very hard to find as they are more of a European designer thing apparently. Finally resorting going to Kleinfeld's tomorrow as they have so many designers but I am dreading their aggressive sale tactics. Might have to go custom at this point which I can't really afford but I don't know what else to do as I can't find anything I like. Ideally I want lace fit+flare or trumpet with a nice neckline and cap or mini-flutter sleeves. Maybe a key-hole back. Any suggestions? Ahhh, it was nice to just vent against Sweethearts! Smiley smile

I like sweethearts. Other shapes just doesn't seem to look right on me. Where are you looking? Did you checkout RK Bridal? I'm in Jersey so I only really know of RK and Kleinfelds.

Maybe try Lovely Bridal?? They have a lot of the indie designers, who may have something less promy.

This one kind of sounds like what you're looking for:

I know the knot and I think WW has a neckline filter when searching for gowns. I'm pretty sure when I was looking for my dress Maggie Sottero & Essense of Australia both had a neckline filter too. Other designers probably have this feature as well and they do offer more that just sweetheart or v-neck. I'll agree that they seem to be the most popular (probably b/c it accentuates the chest a little?) but if you find a few dresses online that have the neckline you want, write down the names/style numbers and use the store locater from the designers site & call ahead. I would also suggest searching yelp near you for a good seamstress since you're going to need regular alterations anyway and find out how much it would cost to change the neckline on a gown this way you know if it's a feasible option for you then you won't be as limited in your search.

I use to be completely against sweetheart necklines, and pretty much swore my wedding dress would not have one. Then I found my dress and fell in love with it sweetheart neckline and all. Alfred Angelo does have some nice dresses without sweetheart necklines. Your better bet maybe to search online for dresses you love and find where sells the dress.

My dress has a Queen Anne neckline, capped sleeves, with a keyhole back: Allure 8764

I am a size 10/12 and it looks way different on me than the model if you google it.

For being a smaller chested lady I really liked the way the sweetheart neckline looks on me. Though I have seen alot of other styles they are out there. Just keep looking them up and researching I am sure you will find something you really love.

I don't think this type of post is allowed anymore. Is that correct?

I agree with melodie. gives my girls some definition. they disappear with some necklines.

i got a lace and tulle trumpet style and am altering the straight across neckline into a sweetheart. Maybe its different where you are but there was a ton of different neckline styles when I was trying on dresses. I didn't want sleeves though so I don't think I tried on any of the styles you like

I'm the same as Out the Window... other cuts look funny on me. Straight across or scoop dresses make my boobs look like a single sausage, and I hate that haha. Sweethearts give the girls natural separation, and as other ladies say, definition.

I know that wasn't your question though. I agree that you can usually search by neckline on these big wedding websites. Good luck!

Im not sure what your budget is -- but have you tried lela rose? she has absolutely AMAZING wedding gowns... there are some more traditional, but a lot of really unique designs with unusual details and necklines.... their shop is on 30th i think?

Honestly I feel like sweethearts are really super flattering on a lot of body shapes, and that's why they're so popular.

Have you tried one on yet? Also, try other necklines on too.

But, my question is, you can't afford custom but you can afford Kleinfelds? REALLY?

I purchased my dress from a woman on Etsy (she is from China - so if that freaks you out don't read on). I have already received my dress and it is INCREDIBLE. She did a great job with it, and I was able to take a dress that I liked and customize it. (However I customized mine toooooo the sweatheart line Smiley winking). She specializes in lace, so if that is what you are looking for, it would be a good match. It is keyhole "fluted" trumpet. I don't have a picture of my dress on this computer, but I'll try to upload one later from my phone.

Her etsy shop is LaceMarry. http://www.etsy.com/shop/LaceMarry?ref=ss_profile

Mine is Essence of Australia. You can go on their website and search for a bridal store near you that carries the designers gowns.

Have you tried on a sweet heart neckline wedding dress yet? I was super set on what I wanted and then one of my bridesmaids convinced me to try on things I didn't think I'd like. Go figure that's how I found the perfect dress. It does happen. If you try it on and decide you still don't like it, the you didn't lose anything.
