What types of food to serve at a 2pm reception?

LORI, on July 19, 2012 at 9:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

The wedding is at 1pm, it is very small maybe 40 people, and the reception is following the wedding, What types of food to serve? I am in a dilemia, I was first thinking baked beans, potatoe salad, pasta salad, ham/turkey, rolls, meatballs, cheese tray, Then my next menu was baked potatoes, kabobs, and a salad and veggies, any other suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

I think you're on the right track. I've seen gourmet sandwich bars done up very nice with selections of artisan bread, fancy deli meat and all kinds of toppings and gourmet mustards. People can build their own sandwich and with a few sides it would be plenty for an afternoon reception.

Indoors? Out? Buffet? Maybe some finger food type things, like baked mini quiche (you can buy frozen), etc. If you're serving a sandwich type thing make sure there's tables to eat them at.

Are you having a bar as well? Honestly, I will tell you that I am a foodie, so, I would go much further than your two choices, but I do not know what your guests expectations.

Where will the reception be held? This will also make a difference.

    And never serve "Kaboobs" LOL!

We are doing 4 types of sandwiches, 3 types of salads and sides, 3 appetizers and assorted breads/pies for dessert. We're getting married at noon in FL in Nov. so we're mixing refreshing sandwiches and warm fall desserts.

Puffin- I think we are having the same wedding! (kidding!)

we are having sandwiches, salads, some appetizers (hummus and veggies and the like), and fresh strawberry pie for dessert. Oh! and FH's cousin and aunt are making cookies for us.

Our. 2 pm ceremony, 3 pm reception will have:

    Pinwheels

    Cheese and crackers

    Fruit

    Mini carne adovada burritos

    Green chile meatballs

    And chips and salsa

Enough to where if someone is hungry, they can make a meal of it, but the general idea is snacks.

We are still deciding on what time everything will start (it's outdoors in March so the warmest time of the day is 1-6pm-ish) but we are leaning towards a 2pm reception. We are doing a BBQ (with all the sides) and Fajita Buffet (with all the sides), with a full dessert buffet (including wedding cookies, cherry cheesecake parfaits, two different types of cobbler, the grooms cake and wedding cake) I really want to make some pies for it too. I am thinking that is going to be my last minute wedding project the week before the wedding Smiley smile

I agree with Kathy on this one. I think it really depends on whether or not you are serving alcohol. If you are serving alcohol, I would do a more than sandwiches and salads. What about a full blown BBQ menu? While I am not a fan of BBQ, many people love pulled pork sandwiches. You could also do a build your own burger station. You could still include your salads and baked beans.
