What to wear to a black tie wedding?

Usually whenever I think of a black tie event I usually think of floor length gowns

Hannah is correct but you may want to double check with the happy couple what they're looking for. It's not uncommon these days for people to say "black tie" to just mean "fancy" or something.

Agreed, to me, black tie is gowns for women, tuxes for men! It's also more evening wear than day wear, so more luxurious fabrics, embellished etc are good, and darker colours are ok as well - I probably wouldn't tend to wear those to a cocktail or daytime wedding.

I would add women can also wear evening jumpsuits and ladies tuxes as well with fine jewelry or statement jewelry. Men wear black or navy tuxedos.
