What to "throw"? Let's talk Send-offs.

Meg, on July 11, 2019 at 10:13 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 29

I feel like I've seen all of the ideas for send-offs out there, from paper lanterns to coconut to herbs to sparklers. I'm at a bit of a mental block here trying to figure out the best send off "thing". We're getting married outside, the reception will be in a barn for the meal and right outside the barn for the dancing. I'm thinking we'll run out of the barn while the guests line up at the dance floor and the getaway car will be right there at the other end of the dance floor.

The send off will be at 9pm in October, so it will definitely be dark. We'll have some lighting from the barn (twinkles lights and a big light coming off the barn), but it's nothing compared to daylight of course. I'm not sure how much lighting situation would effect the "ambiance" of the send off items. Obviously you wouldn't do sparklers in the day-time, but what about confetti at night? All pictures I see have that use wedding confetti for the send off look beautiful, but it's during the day.

Any thoughts or more ideas for send off? What are you doing for this?

I don't want to spend more than $50ish, and I'm planning for 150 guests to actually participate in the send-off.

If you get white/silver confetti the flash of the camera would make it look beautiful! Also, I've seen a couple do bubbles as their night time send off and it looked great!

Good thinking, I didn't even think about the flash for pictures! That's definitely helpful, thank you!!

I did bubbles for mine but it was during the day. If you don't want something thrown at you and want it sparkly then maybe some tinsel pom-poms or ribbons

See what your venue will allow or if there are any restrictions. We’re not allowed to throw anything at our barn venue (because I’m sure picking confetti out of grass is a pain, lol. You can’t just vacuum it!). We’re doing a sparkler send off. Smiley smile

You might still be able to do natural confetti - I've seen people throw lavender and even confetti punched from leaves.

Check with the venue and work your way up. I'm personally a fan of sparklers, I think the lighting is romantic.
But light colored confetti will definitely show in photos as will bubbles

True! I was just looking up natural confetti and it is definitely not cheap. And my bridesmaid was just telling me about hole punches from leaves as confetti which sounds like fun but hours and hours of work...I'm not sure. I love the idea of lavender and/or herbs

My venue allows anything that is biodegradable. And the sparklers may be the way to go!

I've definitely considered DIY ribbon wands but had trouble convincing myself on them as I didn't see any pictures like what I imagine them to be and I'm such a "have to see it done first" kind of person lol

Haha, yeah, I remember seeing a post a while ago about a bride and her bridesmaids having a wine and leaf punching night a day or two before the wedding to get enough

The barn I’m getting married at doesn’t allow sparklers or confetti. I was thinking of doing bubbles but I’m concerned whether or not they will show up in pictures or not. Then my FH saw a cute idea with guest holding white balloons with lights inside, but I don’t want anyone to accidentally release them. You could always get your bridal party to help you make the natural leaf confetti, everyone collect leaves, grab a hold punch and a glass of wine.

I like the lit up balloon idea too and found some pictures of clear balloons with strings of colored or white led lights I thought was a neat idea. I also found an idea of what confetti might look like at night, and instead of sparklers I thought the fountains were a cute idea- though all I could think was fire danger why are they so close to the vegetation!

Be careful with sparklers! My coordinator mentioned that people do it and later their very expensive wedding dress is littered with pinprick sized holes! Just food for thought!

We are doing dried lavender and our send off is at 10:30pm. We will have twinkle outside as well so I’m not too concerned.
