What is with all the Barn wedding themes?

Jane, on October 27, 2017 at 1:00 AM Posted in Planning 0 56

Planning our wedding and I just feel like the Barn style wedding is being over done. Maybe I am just in one of those moods. It is 1258am and I have been staring at pictures of centerpieces and Fall weddings for hours.

Some people like it, some people don't

That would be like me saying what's with all the:

    *1920's theme weddings

    *Beach theme weddings

    *Vintage theme weddings

    They are themes.

You can have a non-rustic, non-barn fall theme wedding. Search for a color scheme rather than "fall" and maybe you'll come up with other options.

I knew I didn't want a barn wedding because my sister had one, but they do happen to be beautiful! Change your searches. I started looking at historical instead and found the perfect venue for us.

Pinterest seems to be an echo chamber. I actually had better luck with inspiration by following some good local photographers and florists on instagram. Then I saw what's current and possible in my area.

I went to one barn wedding, 3 years ago, and thankfully no more. Let's just say the venue didn't keep guest comfort in mind.

I agree with Samantha. I find wedding photographer's websites are so much better than Pinterest. I actually look at a lot who have done weddings at my venue to see what decor looks nice in the venue. Pinterest tends to have a lot of the same ideas over and over.

It's definitely a trend that feels overdone. I live in Wisconsin and all the FB resale groups are full of lace and burlap. It's a theme I like and would have loved for one of daughters to do, but it's not their style. The funny thing is, as much as I see it on Pinterest and on this forum, I've actually never been to a rustic wedding! A couple with some elements of it, but not full on barn theme. Keep in mind that although you see a lot of it online, your guests are probably not up at 12:58 looking at Pinterest for wedding decor. Just pick a vibe that represents you and go with it!

We're getting married in a barn. It was never a "functioning" barn - it is purely a wedding barn for aesthetics. That being said, we'll be in and out of it in less than 30 minutes and move into a large reception-hall space. The barn is not overly rustic, either. It's certainly not my overall "theme" - it's literally just a space to get married in. If you don't like it, don't do it.

    @ H, thank you.

I'll admit, as someone who basically lives in the barn (I'm there far more often than I'm in my own house) I don't get the obsession over barn/rustic weddings for people who don't actually live this lifestyle...but that's my personal opinion, which I generally keep to myself. If someone wants to have a barn or rustic wedding, may they have ALLLLL the burlap they desire.

I don't care for the whole barn wedding thing, but people like it. Or so the internet says, I haven't actually been to one.

More than a few people assumed I'm getting married in a barn because I've owned horses most of my life. They were shocked that I don't want a barn wedding lol. One person was equally shocked that I'm not wearing cowboy boots under my dress. I don't ride Western, I've literally never worn cowboy boots in my life.

I'm having a barn wedding, but there is no burlap and no mason jars. "Rustic" is NOT what we're looking for. Haha.

    @H, I wasn't passing judgement.

I don't care where anyone gets married. I was noticing the trend and I was frustrated at not finding something I was looking for. Living in NY, everything is either outside or is modern. We're getting married in Delaware and I have been looking for historical places. I have 2 1/2 months to plan a wedding for a year from now. The Army has us training and our schedules are jam packed. It's just every person I know had a Barn wedding/reception. As someone who practically lives with our horse in her barn, I didn't want that. It was just me being frustrated and tired trying to get A-Z ideas, because of the limited time frame. We have 5 days of leave to put it all together with our vendors.

I will be sure any future discussion posts will be more considerate on my part.

We inadvertently chose a "barn" wedding before realizing it was super popular because the venue had an awesome view and the "barn" had massive windows (also a lot of wood and very airy/open, which my husband liked; it was never a functioning barn, it was built solely to hold events and was very comfortable). Aside from one of my bridesmaids I think this was the first barn wedding any of the guests had gone to, so I guess it just depends on where you're from.

I was tired of country club/hotel weddings, as well as event halls, and definitely didn't want that. However, it's totally fine if that's what the couple wants, even though it's the same as 90% of the weddings I've been to.

Like others have said, it's helpful to look outside of Pinterest for inspiration. Follow local decorators and florists (try to find people who have worked in your venue) and see what other couples did with the space. Do you have a wedding planner? If you sit down with a planner they can help you find your vision and execute it.

I'm getting married in October and my wedding won't have anything rustic or fall themed. It's about what you picture for your wedding.
