What is this, like, fundraising for your wedding?

Glynnis, on February 8, 2016 at 9:27 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

Okay, I would like to know what some of you think of this, because I was really put off by this the other day and am wondering if it's just me...

I was added to a facebook group for a Jamberry FB "party" to help a bride in her wedding preparations. For those who don't know, Jamberry is a company that sells nail wraps and works like Pampered Chef (there is a consultant you have to buy through and a host who gets money by you purchasing the product). First of all, I hate all these multi level marketing things that make you pressure your friends into buying stuff they usually don't need/want, but I'm even more put off by this one because it explicitly says it is to help the bride with her wedding. I am not invited to this wedding, and even if I were, I wouldn't feel very good being asked to help fund an event I was supposed to be a guest at. Am I off base with being irked by this? Would you/have any of your friends done something like this? Curious about the etiquette consensus here.

I am so annoyed by multilevel marketing and feeling like itworks and jamberry is being shoved down my throat, but this would annoy me even more than usual.

I agree with you. Me personally I feel as though if you don't have the funds on your own to pay for the wedding then a small ceremony for you and close family members may be the best option. This is my first time hearing about fundraising wedding, I don't think it is something I would do personally and I probably would not support it by giving money either.

My FH does younique and everytime I get on Facebook there is a bunch of videos and pictures of herself promoting this. I know it's a little different since she is already married but she is constantly sending me messages about hosting a party or deals they are having. But if you don't have enough money for a wedding, maybe you should wait of get a second job. I worked retail during the holidays for extra cash and a discount to get gifts

Glynnis-- you are not at all off base for any of this. Once a friend told me she has to pay the f'in' company money if she doesn't sell enough, it made it easy to say 'no'-- I figure the best thing I can do for my friends is help them go out of business ASAP.

So annoying and rude. I had to literally tell my friend just today "No Arbonne parties" when she asked me about my bachelorette cause I had a feeling she'd try and pull that shit.

It's weird....it's a thin line because it's always a suggestion that people should pick up second jobs, etc to make money to put towards the wedding, but this seems a little obvious....

I hate all that crap anyway.

I hate it works! I see it everywhere and if you have to post about how much money you are "making" I feel like it's so scammy. Plus I feel like they focus more on getting other members than selling the weird wraps/shakes.

I hate all of these things so much and immediately unfriend people who post about their pyramid scheme products.

I think it's tacky anytime someone tries to fundraiser for their wedding or ask guests for money.

Ugh enough with these fundraisers for weddings. Just have the wedding you can afford without asking for money or going into debt.

Okay, it's reassuring to see that I'm not just a big grumpy pants when it comes to this. Fiance's dad is always getting involved in these schemes and it always causes problems, so I have a particularly strong aversion to it. Plus, this "party" is sending an overwhelmingly annoying amount of notifications, my phone keeps buzzing with new nonsense!

Id be annoyed! I hate these type of things. Plus it would piss me off that she would ask for money from people who aren't invited-it's out of line on all levels!

That is the worst. Why can't people just save up for the wedding they can afford without asking their friends and family to fund it in a gimmicky way? It seriously burns my butt.

I love Jamberry & will be wearing them for my wedding. Even doing their celebration pack as a girls' thing for my BP. BUT, I am paying for everything, like I would be if we went for manis. This is not a party where I'm trying to earn gifts/products.

ETA: I buy Jamberry, Thirty One, Origami Owl, Pampered Chef, etc. But I rarely have parties to earn products/rewards. But I do like and use these products.

My mom has done countless MLMs. Because I can't unfriend my mom (nor do I want to), I try to avoid talking to her about whatever her newest one is. But she tried to "gift me" a starter kit for her latest one (young living essential oils) and then called me in the middle of the work day to ask if she could walk me through the business because I casually said I'd like to make as much money as one kid that is successful with the business. Ugh, NO!
