What is the average price for flowers?

Jaclyn, on July 24, 2014 at 1:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 53

Hi everyone! my FH and I are going to begin meeting with florists this Saturday and I am a little unsure of what the going rate for flowers is. I've asked some friends that have gotten married over the past few years and 3.5k is the average response that I've gotten. I am in the NYC/LI area so I know that prices can be inflated abound here, but any feed back is GREATLY appreciated!!! And if any one has any recommendations for florists on LI (we're getting married at Westbury Manor in Westbury, LI) that would also be GREATLY APPRECIATED =D

Good luck with that one! I don't think there IS an average price of flowers...it all depends on the flowers chosen, the amount of centerpieces/bouquets/bouts needed and where you go...to give you a range, I have gotten two drastic quotes for the same thing:

-10 Tall trumpet centerpieces with season flowers including hydrangea and roses

    -5 bridesmaids bouquets

-1 bridal bouquet (averaged around $175-185)

    -1 groom bout

    -5 groomsmen bouts ($20-30)

    -3 dad bouts (same)

    -Unity candle spray

    -2 altar flower displays

    -2 mom corsages

    -2 grandmother corsages

    -2 grandfather bouts

-1 toss bouquet (both didn't charge for this)

    for $2500-$3500

***would have been a lot more, but I only want to put the arrangements on HALF of the tables. The other half will be rental cylinders that I can get from the venue and fill with floating candles to create lighting

I am also making my own boquet.

How many pieces are your looking for (include bouquets, bouts, corsages, ceremony decor, centerpieces, escort table pieces, sweetheart table piece)? Are you looking for something specific, or are you open to suggestions. If your florist knows two basic pieces of information, budget and the amount of pieces, they should be able to make good suggestions.

To save money, ask about repurposing ceremony decor at the reception. We've had many brides who used two tall centerpieces at the ceremony, and then used them again on reception tables. Also, if you like tall centerpieces, know that they are very expensive. A mix of tall and low is far more economical, but it will still provide the look you're going for.

@matlese - gaaaahhh. That is a big difference. It's seriously amazing how expensive they are!!!! I didn't even think about mother corsages .... i'm going to take your check list with me to the florists ! and your idea of only doing half the tables and the rest with lighting is something i'm going to consider, i never would have thought of that

@erin i'm going to look into silk flowers also, thank you!

The lower priced one threw in the cost of the unity spray as well arrangements for the restrooms, escort table and memorial table....also ask the florist what they do with the extra flowers that are ordered for your wedding and if they do things like that as well. I have two more quotes I want to get and have to get on it next month sometime

My sister spent $2k. Flowers were one of the most important things for her, she had her bouquet, 4 bridesmaids, 7 bouts, and I think 8 centerpieces? They weren't huge, either. Lots of filler, she was majorly disappointed in the cost vs the outcome. Smiley sad

I'm going to attempt to DIY mine. I know it's a risk, but the savings is going to be monumental for me. And flowers aren't at the top of my list. I'm thinking I can do our for under $700.

Those prices are insane! I'm looking to order flowers online & put the arrangements together with the help of friends. So much cheaper.

@the centerpiece flower - our wedding party is much larger then i had anticipated, probably 9 bridesmaids and 9 grooms. I am open to suggestions, i just have a color scheme that I would like to stick with. re-purposing ceremony decor is something that I would like to do.

    Where is your office located?

A lot of the money the florist is going to give you is for time and labor versus actual cost of flowers.

There are some articles online on how to keep your flower budget a low as possible with the florist

    1) Try to use in season flowers that have the look you are going for versus demanding a specific type

    2) Try to use ceremony flowers again during the reception (double duty)

    3) Pick a big bloom like hydrangea versus small buds that would require more flowers

I'm spending a couple thousand dollars for my wedding in Florida.

Mine was right around $3K, but that covered a lot, bouquets, bouts, aisle flowers, a bamboo arch with flowers, hanging orchids, tall cylinder centerpieces with floating candles and three flower bunches on either side, cake flowers, sweetheart table arrangements etc. We used all roses mostly for bouquets and for centerpieces some hydrangeas mixed with roses. Hydrangeas are fuller so it was a little cheaper than all rose centerpieces. I love fresh flowers, and I didn't want to skimp there Smiley smile It was a big budget item but important to me. I don't agree with the whole "I don't want to pay for something that dies after a day" argument. All my pictures and whole wedding came alive because of the pretty flowers Smiley smile

Ugh... flowers are so expensive. This is what I'm paying in Philadelphia (should be similar to LI prices) Make note that I purchased my vases, so these numbers only include the flowers and black wires.

    Bridal bouquet $200:

Vendela Roses, White Ranunculus, White Spray Roses, White Freesia, White Lisi w/ Black Centers, Silver Brunia, Dusty Miller

    Bridesmaid bouquets $80 each:

White Carnations, White Spider Mums, White Lisi w/ Black Centers

    Grandmother Wrist Corsages $25 each:

    White Spray Roses

    Groom's Bout $14:

    White Ranunculus w/ Silver Brunia

    Groomsmen Bouts $15 each:

    White Freesia w/ Silver Brunia

    1 Father Bout $15:

    Vendela Rose

    Fireplace Mantel for ceremony $60

7 Different Height Cylinders Vases With Floating Candles, Submerged Baby's breath and black wire

    Cocktail hour tables $8 each:

Bubble Bowls filled w/ Black Gems and an Floating Open Vendela Rose

    Reception centerpiece #1 $130 each:

3 cylinder vases with black wire, White Hydrangea, Baby's Breath, 2 Open Vendela Roses

(Largest cylinder to have 8 Hydrangea and Smaller to 3 Hydrangea)

    Reception centerpiece #2 $75 each

Large Bubble Bowl w/ swirled Black Wire, 3 White Hydrangea, Baby's Breath, 3 Vendela Roses, 3 White Spider Mums, 3 White Carnations, 1/3 Dusty Miller

For our head table, we're going to have 7 of the tall stemmed candles in picture 1 below along with the bridesmaids bouquets in vases for the flowers.

I've posted 2 pictures of the mockup centerpieces. The taller 3 vase centerpieces will have double the amount of hydrangea than what's shown.

NOTE: You may not be able to use your altar flowers as some churches (if you go this way for your ceremony) think of these as a donation to the church and it is frowned upon and considered to be in poor taste to take them for the reception. Just an FYI

SOME do...I thought the same way until I thought about it...every weekend the church has flowers or some kind of theme, right? Well, on the day of your wedding you are asking that they remove those decorations and replace with flowers that YOU chose, but then you are going to take them away and make the church replace AGAIN before the next mass later that afternoon.

I do think that this falls mostly with ceremony spaces that do not charge much of a fee, too. But I do think it would be something to (tactfully) bring up if its an issue for you.

I had had the very tall cylinder vases…I could have saved about $40 per centerpiece by getting the lower ones…you can def save there, depending on how high your ceilings are or the look you're going for, or for just going for something more simple altogether. My ceilings were 13.5 ft so I needed some height and I just liked em' Smiley smile
