What is the appropriate amount of time to ask off from work for your wedding?

Jaci, on April 30, 2017 at 1:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 30

We're not doing a honeymoon right away so we're unsure of how much time we should ask off from our jobs. We think a week may be too much and 3-4 days may be too little....

I asked for a week off, but that's just because we're getting married out of state.

I'm taking the whole week. Aside from last minute things to do, no way I'm going to be able to concentrate on anything.

Okay, we're getting married within our state so a week may be too much then?

I'm asking for a little over a week as we have two pre-wedding events and are getting married out of state.

I will probably take off Wednesday or Thursday to Monday. I have off weekends so it would be 4 or 5 days.

Eta: I'm getting married in state and fingers crossed will be able to set up most of the venue the weekend before (it's being rented for the first time this year so I'm the first one to rent it this summer). I'm just worried about last minute stuff

@ Jaci - Will you have any OOT guests you will want to see before the wedding? If not then two days before and one to two days after should suffice

Am3131, that sounds like a really good plan. I think we'll try for something like that. It's enough time to tidy up last minute things without the stress of work on your mind as well. Thanks for the input everyone!

I am going to front load work the week of the wedding. I will be off from the 17th until the 21st and not take PTO. I will take PTO from the 21st for one week (36hrs) and return Nov 1st That is the beauty of 12 hour shifts and working with a great group of coworkers. We work with eachother.

I asked off for the full week before our Friday wedding. I find it's easier to 'give back' vacation days then to ask for more/last minute.

It also depends on how much PTO you have off, and what else you want to use it for. I have 4 weeks, and haven't used any of it yet.

I am getting married on a Friday with 30 guest and am off weekends. I am taking off Wednesday and Thur. If I were you I would take a half day two days before and the whole day prior, plus at least one day after. So at minimum 2 and 1/2 days. Even though you're not taking a honeymoon doesn't mean you won't want some alone time together. 3-4 days is not too much if you are having a midsize to large wedding. You want to have time to handle last minute things you may have forgotten.

I'm only asking for the two days before the wedding off, and then 2 weeks after for the honeymoon.

We went on our honeymoon right away, so I only took off the Friday before (we had a Saturday wedding) and then 7 work days after for our trip to Europe. If we hadn't gone on the honeymoon immediately, I probably would have taken off Thursday through Monday.

I think it depends on the job. I teach and I couldn't imagine taking a week off from my students. By day two of being gone the class is chaotic, haha!

FH is a professor at our local university, and I work PRN or as needed as a nurse so we strategically chose our date to be a week after he gives his last final. We get married on that Saturday and head off to our honeymoon the following Monday.

I think it also depends on what type of wedding you are having, how big, how much DIY, do you have a DOC? If you're doing a lot of DIY and setting up yourself I would take the week off.

I am taking about a month off, ONLY because my wedding is in our home state (NY) and we are currently in San Diego.

    1. My cousin is getting married two weekends before us and it would be silly for us to fly back and forth.. too much money.

    2. There is SO much crunch time that needs to happen within that month so I need to be home for it. (Finalizing everything, final dress fitting, etc.)

    3. My work/management is gracious enough to allow me this time. Also I work 6 days a week, 60 hours a week and very rarely ask for time off, so they had no problem allowing this.

Trust me I WISH I didn't need all that time because not working for that long is going to freak me out, but it's needed (and I have been saving $$ for that). The struggles of being in the other side of the country!! Smiley sad

I'm getting married on a Friday. I have the weekend off so I asked for Monday to Wednesday off. Our honeymoon is 2 weeks later and I requested 1 1/2 weeks off. We're doing something small 4 days away
