My husband and I are 7 years apart and he is the oldest. Besides the fact that my husband and my older sister are the same age, our age difference has never been a problem in our relationship. I actually wouldn't even consider that a problem but it was just weird when I introduced him to my sister, lol. The best part about our age difference is how similar and yet different we are. I grew up in the 90's and he grew up in the 80's so our life experiences are not always the same but they are similar. I love that he can teach me different things and he loves my light-hearted perspective on life.

What is the age gap between you and your partner? Who is the oldest? Has the age difference ever been a problem in your relationship? What is the best part about the age difference in your relationship?

Well, Spanish is his first language. Although I learned Spanish in my teens and early twenties, sometimes things get lost in translation. We mostly speak Spanish at home. I speak a Mexican dialect and he speaks a Guatemalan dialect. We both use different words for some things. Like the word that he uses for bedsheets means jacket to me. So he asked me to grab clean sheets once and I came back with his coat lol. We both use a different word for straw, popcorn, grass and so many other words. I’ve had to adjust my Spanish to his a bit more to eliminate confusion. Especially with the future in-laws because they speak no English at all. Sometimes we will talk about something (like grass for example, my in-laws had finished working on their lawn and we were commenting on how good it looked.) and we will each use our preferred word for grass (him calling it grama and me calling it pasto or césped) and we will understand each other but confuse his parents.

Other cultural differences popped up when I was pregnant for our now 12 month old son. I’m a nurse so I went to work an overnight shift during a lunar eclipse and he called me all frantic because I left the house during the eclipse without wearing an amulet for protection. His parents believe that any sort of eclipse can cause harm to the baby. I had to assure them that I believe in science and not folklore. The baby was fine!

My fiancé is 2 years younger than me. I always thought I would be younger than my spouse. Even though 2 years isn't much in the eyes of most people, it was a mental block I had to get over. Now I don't even think about it! If the two of you get along well, have similar interests and goals as a couple, you won't even notice an age difference.

Why was it a mental block? How did you get over it?
