What do foreigners need to get married in San Diego

Rhiannon, on May 4, 2018 at 12:00 PM Posted in California Planning 0 2
Hi!

My fiancé and I are planning on having our actual wedding in a few years, but we both want to get legally married before then. He’s a Mexican citizen working in the US and I’m a British student. (The main reason we’d like the legal marriage is to make it easier for him to move to the UK to live with me). So we were planning on getting officially married in June when I visit him in San Diego. What will we both need to provide?
Are passports enough or birth certificates etc?
He has a SSN but obviously I don’t, will this affect us?

I think you need to contact the UK embassy in California/San Diego ASAP because this sounds very complicated and I think you need answers from a legal entity. If you’re hoping to get married next month you need to get the ball rolling with the legal process immediately.

Hey Rhiannon, check with the SD county office, or wherever would be issuing you your marriage license. This varies from state to state and county to county, so they are the only authority on the subject. I can tell you that when I got a license to marry my DH who is a UK citizen it didn't cause any problem that he did not have a SSN, and he did not need to show any particular sort of documentation. It was very easy in my county, I hope it will be for you too!
