What are you wearing to courthouse for marriage license?

Susana A, on February 17, 2017 at 8:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 55

On feb. 24th I will have to go get my marriage license. Do I have to wear a dress? Or I can just dress casual? Do I have to have a bouquet? I have never been to courthouse marriage before so I have no idea how it works.

sorry for the dumb question, but I would appreciate your helpSmiley smile

Jeans and a tshirt. Getting your license isn't a ceremony. You fill out paperwork, present required identification, and take an oath that said information is accurate to the best of your knowledge.

You aren't getting married. You are just signing the paperwork to get the license.

Does FH have to be there even? I was just going to drop by after work and pick up the form. I really need to look into this more. HaHa!

Where I live only one person has to apply and sign, I'll be wearing yoga pants and a tshirt because that's my everyday go to. Lmao!

Picking up a license =/= getting married. Meet FH there on your lunch or after work or whenever in whatever you wore for the day.

Thanks! I better look this up. I thought the day it was signed was the day you are married?

Pretty sure I hadn't showered and was in some form of athletic wear when we went. It wasn't a big deal or to-do. We just went on some rainy Tuesday.

@EW this varies. We signed the day we got it and our witnesses/officiant signed it immediately before the ceremony.

I just looked it up and in CA it's valid for 90 days so I just need to go get it at some point before the wedding. You can also download the form online in my county. Easy.

    Someone pissed in Debbie's cornflakes.

OP isn't from here so it wasn't stupid of her to ask.

ETA: Debbie would your last name happen to be "Downer"?

Basically whatever I wear to work which is jeans and a clean shirt. Both parties have to be present when we get our license here and we have to wait a certain period before we can officially get married and sign.

@Debbie because she's not from here and not completely familiar with how it works in the US so she probably figured that she'd ask a forum that's for ya know...weddings.

If this pisses you off this much then you may want to go see somebody.

I really can't stand the word stupid.

We had on our work attire. You don't have to get fancy at all.

Well ok then @Debbie. No question is stupid.

OP, I'd look up the courts requirements. I tried looking up their criteria for the county we are getting married in because I'm curious now. They're so weird and contradictive. But if you're just picking up the marriage license, you don't have to get dressed up or anything as far as I know. ETA: @Debbie, if I remember correctly, OP is not originally from the States. Her question is completely valid, as she's not familiar. But you know everything I guess.

OP how long is your license going to be good for where you're getting married? 2 months is a long time to hold onto it!

@Debbie I'm pretty sure you can't read. When someone is from another country, the customs are different. When customs differ, common sense isn't so common. God forbid you need help with something here. I promise you won't get help from the WW community.
