Welcome Drinks in Downtown Brooklyn - venue recommendations

Sam, on July 24, 2023 at 6:22 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 4

Hi folks

Fiancé and I are getting married at 501 Union in Gowanus in October. Our host hotels are just north in Downtown Brooklyn. We want to have "welcome drinks" somewhere the night prior to our wedding, since plenty of family is coming in from out of town. We were thinking of paying for snacks/apps at whatever venue we choose, but guests would grab their own drinks. Keeping it casual for this event.

Has anyone done this in the area? I'm looking for a spot where 40ish people could gather in a casual setting, preferably in the Downtown Brooklyn area so that people could walk from their hotel.

My original thought was the Ace Hotel Brooklyn (one of the host hotels) in their Lobby Bar. However, you can only reserve one of their big banquets. I know folks can hover at other open spots in the bar or find available tables, but I'm worried that if I can only put food out in the one spot, that it will cause this massive cluster and won't feel right. Anyone have experience with this or other venues in the area for welcome drinks? Any and all guidance appreciated.

I am sorry I do not have any recommendations other than suggesting you call it it "Welcome Apps" if that is what you will be providing. If you call it "Welcome Drinks", as a guest, I would assume it's open bar.

I was a guest at something similar but in Pennsylvania. The bride told everyone by word of mouth that they were going to some local breweries and walking around town. I forget how she worded it but it was known that we were paying for our own drinks. She didn’t provide snacks. We ended up at one brewery that had a lot of open space at the bar and then by the high top tables.

I guess my advice would be to find a spot and tell your guests “we’re going to hang out here the night before the wedding if anyone wants to join us! Pay your own!” And leave it at that.

    Good luck finding a spot!

I'm quite clear in the event description that it's a cash bar and we will not be providing drinks for guests (already paying for a robust open bar at the wedding, cant afford a second one haha).

Just difficult finding the right spot since so many bars in the area are super cute but super tiny.

Have you checked out Circa Brewing, it’s a pizza place and brewery in one. something fun and a bit different. Other places to check out are Livingston Manor and The Rockwell Place. Hope you find something great, happy planning!
