Wedding vows/ceremony- what order

NewMrsWesely, on March 16, 2016 at 11:20 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

So we are having my brother officate the wedding. Right now I am just trying to figure out the standard order that the vows go. We won't be having any readings or anything like that. Just my brother saying things and then us. My question- does the officant normally have you say your vows, then the rings and then i dos? I am so lost on this part..

The way our ceremony goes (which is not at all the way yours has to) is I dos (which our officiant described as your promise to whatever higher power you believe in), then vows (your promise to each other), then rings, then pronouncement (the man and wife/partners in life part).

Handfasting is binding the couples hands together with ribbon. There are several variations but basically it's saying that now you are bound to each other forever. We are doing one instead of a unity ceremony.

So is it typical to do the rings then the vows? It's been a few years since I have been too a wedding and I can't remember.

    Vows and then rings.

If you had hired a pro, s/he could answer all of the questions you'll have -- including the legal bits about the license.

My uncle wrote our entire ceremony himself and we just gave him the vows we wanted to use. We did vows then rings.

If it helps, this is what we and our officiant were thinking we would do:

    Prelude

    Procession (grandmothers and mothers)

    Bridal Procession

    Opening Prayer

    Reading of Scripture

    Officiant Speaks

    Exchange of Vows

    Exchange of Rings

    Blessing

    Pronouncement of Marriage

    Recessional
