Wedding Venue will not let us postpone. Help!

Trinity, on July 7, 2020 at 3:10 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 5

Hello everyone,

I am in such a dilemma. We are supposed to get married on October 10, but we have so many cases in FL that the guests are uncomfortable to attend. I have spoke to other vendors, and they are very accommodating. However, my venue will not let us postpone. They stated that since they are opened for business, a postpone would be count as cancel. This means we will be losing about 5 figures (expensive venue). I thought about having a smaller wedding, but the in laws and the groom are from out of state. I find the venue to be very unreasonable, but the in laws said they are uncomfortable of attending. How do I have a wedding if the only people show up are my side of family, not even the groom's parents? At this point, I am not sure what to do. Did you have similar issue? Please help!

Thanks!

I think the venue is being unfair. I would read through your contract again and see if there’s anything in there about postponing. Depending on what the contract says, you might not be able to postpone without having to pay.

Fingers crossed and you still have some time before October for things to possibly settle down a bit. I feel like things are changing by the month with this coronavirus stuff and they may feel differently about it by October. At this point if you feel as though you definitely can’t cancel, and if they definitely won’t attend, the only suggestion I could have would be for you to try doing zoom.

I would check the contract again and see if there is anything that COVID might fall into. I can't believe so many vendors and venues are taking advantage. If they don't budge even a little the only other thing you can do is find and consult w/ a lawyer or hope that the state closes down those kind of events. Crazy here in MA an indoor wedding can only be 15 people with social distancing but FL is a whole different ball game.

This is absolutely a check your contract issue.

After that, maybe a chat with a lawyer. And then a chat with the venue again.

Particularly if said venue might be liable for an outbreak....

Hi Trinity! That's definitely a tough situation. I'd thoroughly read your original contract again to see what the stated rescheduling and cancellation policies are. Ideally it would be wonderful if they would let you postpone right now, but you need to see what's been agreed to legally!
