Wedding venue "renovations"

Kathleen, on December 16, 2016 at 8:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hello All- I am in need of urgent advice.

Background- My fiancé and I booked our destination wedding in Colorado in August of 2015, after touring in April 2015. We have been in regular contact and have paid 75% of our 10k estimated cost with the balance due 3 days before with the final count. We are exactly 2 months away from our wedding tomorrow.

This afternoon, I got an email letting me know that they will be renovation the space we have reserved for our ceremony and reception. I called them back, left a message and then they called me back and left a message. Their message let me know that they still have "space available" for our wedding.

How have others handled a similar situation? We have about 60% of our guests flying in. Plane tickets have been purchased MONTHS ago. We are literally thousands of dollars into this. I don't have a job where I can make/ take personal calls so my fiancé is going to manage this. I am almost scared for them.

I am 1700 miles away. It's an events center. If I wanted an events center wedding, I wouldn't fly across the country. I attached a picture of our original venue.

Our contract is for ceremony and reception on the mezzanine, which is the area they say will be under renovations.

We had a DW and I noticed a few months before the wedding on their website that the government forced them to drain the lake and fix a damn. It would effect the amazing entrance to the resort and my rehearsal dinner, which was by the lake. I was furious. I emailed my coordinator, who assured me it would be completed by my wedding.

Fast forward to a week before and I get an email. Its still not complete. We can move the rehearsal or still have it there. Either way they were giving us a hefty discount for our troubles without us even asking. She sent over photos and it looked fine, so we kept it in the location and took the discount.

Email your venue ASAP and ask to see photos of the new spaces. See if they can renegotiate the contract for your troubles. Its the least they can do.

Ahh... the Hotel Boulderaldo? I just read an article this morning about their renovation plan. I was actually thinking of using them for hotel blocks. I'm having second thoughts now if they are not finished by then.

I would be happy to stop by there during renovations and take pictures for you if you need it. Just let me know. It is a beautiful spot.

I am so sorry. Frankly, you don't want to be handling this on the phone. I agree, email them requesting them with pictures/plans of what it will look like and time line. If their explanation is not to your satisfaction, you and FDH need to tell, in writing that it appears that they are no longer able to perform the terms of the contract and you want the money back. Good luck.

@cindysue- yes! I found the daily camera article.

They are full of crap when they say they just found out yesterday about the renovations. 4 month renovations don't come to fruition over night. I had my last planning meeting around 10/25 where we planned our grand entrance off the historic elevator. After phone tag, I left them a message to contact my fiancé on Monday morning. I also emailed them back letting them know how disappointed we are. I think I will be contacting a couple wedding planners in the area to see if anyone can help us. Our friends have already booked plane tickets. We had hotel room block/ discounts and I know people had already booked that as well.

Our contracts states that breaking of the contract would be difficult for both parties and that the only money returned/ due would be that outlined in the contract. So it seems that we would essentially get out 7500 back, which is nice but still really crappy.

Are they offering you any compensation if you have it there, just at a new space? Are they working with you at all?

Yes. I would be pissed too. They seem professional so maybe they have a plan. Who knows. But let me know if you need help since I'm in the area.

They are going to call my fiancé tomorrow morning, so we will know more then. I am guessing he will text me as soon as he gets off the phone. I'll post an update then. I think we are going to come up with a couple different game plans based on what they offer.
