Wedding Venue refusing to give a refund! What to do

Lisa, on July 3, 2020 at 5:13 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
Our wedding is scheduled to be August 30, 2020 in LA and after waiting and hoping things would get better its still not looking so good ! We finally made the decision to cancel the wedding and only do the church ceremony, we called the venue and they gave us such a hard time about the refund even though last month they told us if they can't host it we will get a full refund!! Now they are telling us we can still host it we are open just no dancing and no drinking!! So how is that hosting a wedding, please anyone who has any ideas or suggestions to please let us know what we should do!!!!!

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm kinda going thru the same thing with my venue and the refund thing. I did read that alot of people are sueing their venue because of this. Maybe you can ask if everyone wears mask would dancing and alcohol be allowed. I always email my venue to make sure everything is in writing just incase I do have to sue. I hope you can come up with a resolution.

    Thank you so much Jene
They told us they need to follow the guidelines so there will be no dancing and no alcohol and thats for now. Within the next month it could be worse!! How did you handle it? Are you still trying with the refund?

Could you postpone the reception to a later date or do you not want to do that? What does your contract say about cancellations?

We decided not to postpone because no one knows when things will start to be better, the contract does say no refunds however it doesn't say anything about pandemics and thats what we asked the venue about last month and thats when they told us if its related to the pandemic we will work with you and give you a full refund only if related to covid 19! But now the story changed!! I wish I got something in writing Smiley sad

I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through this! Is the bar/alcohol listed in your contract with them (were they supposed to be supplying the alcohol for the bar)? If so, it sounds like they would be unable to meet that part of the contract, since you said that they said no drinking is allowed. I'm not sure if that would help get a refund for you, but may be something to look into. I also agree with the previous comment of maybe postponing the reception instead of cancelling?

We decided to drop the number of guest to meet the guidelines. The venue decided to charge us less then the full price bc of this. Our wedding is in Sept. The also agreed that we didn't have to make any more payments until 2 weeks prior. We didn't want to postpone either bc we didnt know what will happen later.

Sounds like what they meant is that if the Gov. forces them to shutdown they will give you a refund. In this case you are deciding not to go forward. It is strange that you can't have alcohol at this event. If that isn't State mandated then this is a point to contest.

If your contract includes dancing and alcohol guess what you have every right and are entitled to your full refund. Why? because they truly cannot host the wedding that you paid for. So I would go off with that Smiley smile Always make sure when requesting refunds to go through your contract, highlight everything that they cannot comply with your contract and BAM you get your refund because you are keeping your end of the contract by paying for your services and you are not getting them so it's pointless to keep a venue that cannot offer you what you paid for.
