Wedding Venue Refund

Lecette, on August 16, 2020 at 6:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
My July 2021 wedding was cancelled. THANKS CORONA! Mu venue happily rescheduled us to a 2021 date at no extra charge. However life happened and 2021 is not a good fit for us. I asked if it was possible to get a refund for our deposit. They technically could not host our wedding because it is a indoor venue. Has anybody else been a similar situation? Also I never signed a 2021 contract.

Unfortunately, I think this is going to be one where you're out of your deposit. They offered you a chance to reschedule and since restrictions are unknown for 2021, it would be you doing the canceling, not the venue. Therefore, you would be out of your deposit since it's not their decision.

Best advice is to have an attorney review your contract. It's really going to depend on what your contract says, and they can widely vary. An attorney will probably charge you a small fee, but depending on how much of a deposit you are talking about, it might be worth it if they can help guide you to some recourse within the parameters of your contract's language.

Most deposits are non refundable and I will say I know most venues and vendors are not easily going to give back money so they do not completely lose out on funds for their business. As others have said review the contract because even though you did not sign up for anything in 2021 if the contract states to refunds on deposits then you either have to postpone or lose on the money.

Talk to your lawyer, but you're most likely out your depost.

I mean you could talk to a lawyer, and for the consult fee maybe it would be worth it, but I would be very surprised if you got your deposit back. You're cancelling, not postponing, so...

Unfortunately, you may be out of a deposit especially since it seems you're cancelling instead of them cancelling on you. Review your contract again to see what it specifically says about cancellations & your deposit, but I don't have high hopes that you'll get your money back. Is there any way you can postpone again? You said the rescheduled date won't work so is there anything that will?
