Guys, I kid you not two days ago we decided to get married this October after thinking we would get married next October and start the wedding planning this coming August. Well about 3.5 months away, little money saved, let’s see if I can do this under $1,500.

Keep your guest list as small as possible. More guests = more money. Have you considered a restaurant for the reception? Or BBQ or Italian catering? It can be as inexpensive as $10-12 per person. Plus that's one less thing for you to worry about doing.

I think not feeling them and making them share two bathrooms in a first world country—- you’re cutting into close

They are being fed, and that was a typo earlier I tried to write four full bathrooms.

That’s our goal. We technically only have 45 but will plan for a little more. We didn’t consider a restaurant because we didn’t want to do a full dinner. We didn’t want a long party. So we opted for heavy appetizers and a fun dessert table. There is a neat New York style deli here and we will do two 8ft Long hero’s and than have things like potatoe salad, and whatever other fixings are typically eaten with them. Me and my fiancé loveeeee sandwhiches and I have the biggest sweet tooth so we figured our menu could reflect that while also adhering to the budget as best we could.

You may also look at the Walmart deli, or something similar. They have sub sandwiches in varying lengths that may be more cost effective. I've never seen them at a reception, but have seen them at various other gatherings where they cut them into sections and put a fancy toothpick in them and arranged them on a large tray.

I can understand where you’re coming from, and I think it’s easy to feel like people are ganging up on you but just try to take it all with a grain of salt—these people don’t know you so it’s not personal and they really are just trying to point out possible pitfalls—quite possibly ones that they encountered. You can decide if they apply to you or not.

You didn’t say how many are attending. I think it’s quite possible to host properly under that. I have had parties at my house with a certain number of people with no problem. I also was thinking about the forum when my parents hosted everyone who had been at our wedding at their rental house. I am one of those people who had an expensive wedding for the small number of people I had (but it was still something I personally could afford). But we had most of the guests (let’s say about 20) the next day over to my parents for barbecue and it was maybe $250. So it got me thinking that if we had a more casual wedding, we definitely could have done it in a house. We probably could have had more than twice that and still been okay with the existing bathrooms, etc. So, just keep doing what you’re doing and monitor your budget. So long as people know what the party will be, they’ll moderate their own expectations.

Not sure why everyone keeps going on about how your guests won't be properly hosted or how you need a waiter for a backyard wedding LOL

Everything you said sounds fine! And good on you for not getting swept up in the expensive wedding hype.

I wrote my response before seeing this update—I think 45 is totally okay at home. Especially with 4 bathrooms. FWIW, my mom—who grew up in a family of 13 kids—lived in a house with 2 bathrooms, one of which is on a back porch. My aunt had a back yard wedding with no problems, and we routinely had thanksgiving at my grandmothers house—with nearly 50 people including cousins, etc, seated inside. And every other holiday with no tables but easily that many.

Exactly it’s basically like “hey we are getting married and there will be some food and snacks after” it’s a short thing two hours is all. I didn’t want anything huge or fancy. I knew it wasn’t in my budget and we are super nonchalant about stuff like this we just wanna be married lol and eat after hahaSmiley smile

First she said she was having 60 guests, home made apitizers and two bathrooms: now she’s changed the whole plans.... seems weird don’t you think ?

If you look at my posts I point blank said I have 45 with absolution and will plan for 60 to be safe that is where my initial number came from. I also said I made a typo and mean to say four full bathrooms. There is no change of plans:
home not mine- inlaws so YES I can afford my own stinking home.
    bathrooms: 4
    ceremony plus party- 2hrs total
food- sandwhiches and potato salad, maybe pickles things like that with a fun desert bar with goodies like that.
favors-bags with out wedding info to create diy candy goodie bags.
Do you want to know my social as well? I mean darn.

I don’t go to picnics or pot luck parities, no. I think it’s because I have taken food safety classes.
any bbq that I have been to is cooked meat, literally grill to plate.
The things you listed above are not weddings, they are, as you called them: picnics, bbq and back yard parties.

I don’t understand. Are you inviting 60 guests or 45 guests?

I don't understand your point. This is not a pot luck event. I suppose you ignore all the side dishes prepared by the hosts at a BBQ as well?

My point is that there's no reason why a wedding (and I mean this in the dictionary sense of "the act of marrying") cannot be followed by a backyard party instead of a large reception.

Oh yeah I wouldn’t eat any side dishes if they were not in the refrigerator when I put it on my plate. Expecally if it was egg/mayo based.

Weddings come in all shapes and sizes. If you're getting married at it, it's a wedding - even if it includes a party in a bowling alley or a backyard barbecue. While we're all planning weddings, we're not planning the same event.
