Wedding tasting, only offers three options

AEE7, on October 30, 2019 at 6:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

We just scheduled our reception dinner tasting and upon reading the dinner print we discovered:

-Tasting is $60 (includes 3 entrees, bread, salad, and complimentary dessert for 4 people) Was surprised to have to pay for the tasting but oh well

-What I am more concerned about is only being able to taste 3 options for the $60. Any more entrees we want to try we have to pay full price for.

The three options doesn't even feel like a tasting at that point because we are going to have three options at the reception. Is this normal? Is it appropriate to ask the venue what's up with that policy?

Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, food costs money so caterers are sometimes unlikely to let you try a lot. From what I can tell, it's pretty common to only have a set amount of foods to try. I personally wouldn't ask the caterer about their policy, but if it means a lot to you then I don't see the harm in asking!

It’s very common to only offer a set number of entrees. The concept is to see their style and their quality, not to taste everything you’re considering serving at your reception. You could ask about it, but it’s unlikely that it’s going to change their policy.

I had a whole list of things and then I thought maybe there might be a limit. I checked just to make sure and sure enough she replied back with the same thing. We could only choose a few, which makes sense if you think about it. We just picked the ones that sounded the best to us and keep our fingers crossed that we really like what we try.

We didn’t have to pay put but we could only taste 3 options for entrees which is how many options we gave our guests.

We had to beg our caterer to let us have 3 options. They originally said 2 but we had to choose 3 options. They were kind enough to let us add a third free of charge (we offered to pay for more)

I would see this as a good thing. If they were able to offer you a bunch of tastings, it would mean they aren’t making the food fresh.
It’s the same reason why I prefer restaurants with only a one page menu- I don’t care about what’s offered so much as what kind of quality and care that goes in to it. Even without tasting more you’ll be able to tell if your style meshes with theirs.

We got to try three entrees with sides along with three appetizers and two salads. The tasting was complimentary for the couple but extra people were $40 each. Honestly anything beyond that would have felt too overwhelming - we were stuffed afterwards and didn't even finish everything.

We did three catering tastings, but they were all free after we booked our venue (we had 6 caterers to choose from). We tasted 6 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 3 sides. So the food tasted seems pretty standard. We picked the food we wanted to try, it made sense they couldn't make 4 types of chicken and 5 types of steak for each tasting.

Hi everyone, thank you for your input! Now that I know the tasting they are offering is pretty standard, I will let it be!
