Wedding Superstitions: Something Old, New, Borrowed, & Blue

Lisa, on October 24, 2024 at 7:28 AM Posted in Community Conversations 2 18
Are you planning to follow the superstition of wearing something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue? If so, what are you choosing for each category?

For my wedding, I put a twist on the superstition: instead of finding those items to wear myself, I instead incorporated those themes into gifts that I got for my husband to open before our first look!

I did! Old was trim from my mom’s wedding dress stitched into my pocket and made into a hankie I wrapped around the bouquet. New was the dress. Borrowed was a pin from my late MIL in the bouquet. And blue was my fabulous shoes, plus my earrings.

Your shoes are so pretty!!! I also really like how you included something from both your mom and your late MIL.

Yes I will he be doing them:
My something old is a decorative hair comb piece my late grandmother wore to her 50th wedding anniversary about 30 years ago.

My something new and blue is going to be a pair of sapphire earrings that I can turn into a family heirloom for my daughters.
Still trying to figure out what my something borrowed will be.

I mean, I don't think something blue is necessary but I am wearing some because it's one of my wedding colors.

I'm not doing it for my wedding. It just so happens that my wedding colors/theme is blue floral. So by accident I will have large blue floral earrings that are new. Along with everything else I'm wearing that is new. I probably won't have something old or borrowed. It is a cute tradition though! Definitely could bring a lot of sentimental value to weddings borrowing something possibly old as well from a loved one.

I did for the most part. For old, by childhood friend's parents gave me an antique pearl necklace that belonged to his grandmother. I considered my wedding dress to be new since it was custom made for me. I borrowed my sister's wedding shoes, but we couldn't find anything blue. It's fun to put your own spin on an old tradition.

Aww, I love that your "something new/blue" will become a "something old/blue" later on for your daughters! The decorative hair comb from your grandmother sounds very special too.

Blue was one of my wedding colors too! What shade did you pick? How are you incorporating it into your attire?

We chose royal blue to dark blue. There are a lot of faux roses which I am going to use. The groomsmen boutonnieres are blue and the bridesmaids dresses are blue. My bouquet is a mixture of blue gold and cream which are my wedding colors and the Bridesmaids have small bouquets which are cream blue and just a touch of gold. My decorations are also a mixture of blue gold and cream for the reception hall.

I did! The old was my grandmother's pearl necklace, the new were my earrings, the borrowed was a sixpence from my Aunt (I was the 4th bride in my family to borrow them), and the blue was on my garter.

I agree that this tradition has the potential to add a lot of sentimental emotion to the day! Something borrowed or something old are also great for incorporating something from a close friend, older family member, or parent. Awesome that blue is one of your colors! I also chose blue as one of my colors. What shade(s) of blue are you incorporating?

It's a lot of fun to put your own twist on any tradition! I don't blame you for skipping the something blue - I feel like something blue is often a difficult one, especially if blue isn't one of the wedding colors. The pearl necklace you had as your something old sounds beautiful and special.

Ooh, dark blue and gold are a beautiful combination! Sounds like you have some good ideas for incorporating those colors into your wedding attire and decor, I especially like how you are including them in your bouquet.

Getting those gifts for your husband based on the bridal tradition ideas sounds like a fun alternative to that tradition.

It's great when accessories or elements of an image seem personal and dear to the heart. Such things give shape not only to style, but also to deep meaning.

I am getting Grandma to make me a chain with blue beads and a photo charm to put a picture of my papa in.
Don't know what I'm gonna borrow?
Asking my other Grandma if she has something old to give me.
