Wedding Shoes

Emily, on April 18, 2022 at 9:21 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 18

I noticed a couple posts about wedding shoes recently. Is buying shoes specifically for your wedding necessary? I thought since nobody would see your shoes because of your dress, you can get away with wearing anything. Am I wrong?

Thanks for your opinions!

You can do whatever you want! I think a lot of brides just get excited to buy fun new things for their wedding. It is similar with jewelry. Im sure most of us had shoes that would've worked, but it is exciting to get something new.

I'd say, if you have shoes you know are comfortable and you like them them just go for those!

Totally not necessary to buy new shoes just for the wedding! If you already own a pair of shoes that you like, you could certainly wear them on your wedding day.

My dress is tea-length, so new shoes were necessary as people will definitely see my feet. Smiley laugh

Thank you for saying this. I just had my fitting and was so devastated that my Manolos nor Badgley Mishka are so uncomfortable. I think I will opt for something in my closet quite honestly At this point I’m even thinking Converse!

Definitely do something comfortable, regardless of whether you buy new shoes or wear ones you already own!

Totally not necessary! Getting something new is fun, but you can definitely wear something you already own. Unless your dress is shorter like Pat's, nobody will see your shoes. I always tell everyone not to buy shoes that are marketed as "wedding shoes" because the prices are jacked up solely because they're for an event that people tend to spend more on than they normally would. "Regular" shoes are just as pretty, and (usually) cost less.

Totally makes sense! My mom is pushing me to get new shoes, but I just bought a pair of super comfortable wedges that I want to wear.

Yes of course! Tea-length would definitely need cute shoes since people will see your feet!

I'm wearing the shoes I wore to my high school prom. They're 10 years old but in good condition and, most importantly, already broken in.

If you do get new shoes, I suggest wearing them before your wedding day to break them in.

Daughter and SIL are very close in height and she didn't want to be taller than him for the wedding so she was only looking for flats. She tried a ton of options but found every pair uncomfortable. Converse have been her go-to shoes since her early teens and she finally decided THOSE were her perfect wedding shoes. She found some in the main wedding color and we took them to a t-shirt shop and had them personalized with her new name and the wedding date. They were adorable, and, more importantly, incredibly comfortable. The day of the wedding she wore them for 12+ hours and danced all night like a crazy woman! Her dress was a full ballgown and the only time anyone saw her shoes was when she lifted her skirt to walk down steps. But, those who saw them thought they were perfect for her! Best of all, she wore those shoes constantly for nearly 3 years -- only replacing them this fall when I got her a new pair that said: "her-baby's-name's Mama" and the baby's birthdate! Smiley winking

That's awesome! I'm definitely planning on slipping into sneakers for the reception, but I might wear something with a small heal for the ceremony.

No one will notice or care what shoes you are wearing if your dress is long. If your dress is short, guests will notice them for .01 seconds and move on to other more important details so wear whatever you want. No need to buy brand new shoes unless you want to. Make sure that if you plan to change out of heels into flats or lower heels that the dress is altered for the flattest shoes. Otherwise you and guests will trip on your dress.

Definitely not necessary! It’s whatever you want. You could wear new shoes or used ones. I definitely recommend feeling comfortable in them since weddings are long events with lots of standing.

I personally opted for low white/ivory heels that I’ll be able to use after the wedding for date nights out with the right clothes.

Definitely no need to buy new shoes if you have some you love already! They really aren't seen much depending on the style and length of your dress, as you say.

To explain my thinking as someone who bought new shoes for my wedding day... I personally couldn't justifying spending as much as I did on my wedding shoes day-to-day/for no reason, but this special event felt like a 'good enough' reason. They were also sentimental for me - I was wearing Louboutins the first time I met my now-husband, so wearing a pair on my wedding day was meaningful for us. Because they're nude and a classic shape and style, I will be able to wear them after the event, and so the wedding was just a justification to buy something that will become a 'going out' staple for special dates in the future for us.

I think for a lot of people, they either see it as an opportunity to buy something they normally wouldn't, that they couldn't justify the expense of but have always wanted. In other cases, buying a 'special' pair of shoes feels like a way to make the day feel more special too - a big, important day, where you'll wear special, meaningful clothes that has been picked especially for that day, and that place.

I'm the type of person who definitely is sentimental towards clothing and shoes - I often buy a new dress or shoes or earrings for special events and whenever I wear it again I'll remember wearing it at X's wedding and how nice that day was, and it's like all those feelings and memories come flooding back. So, it was a no brainer to me, having a special pair of shoes for my own wedding because I know that every time I wear them I'll remember the first walk I took in them being to meet my husband at the altar.
