Wedding ring

Emily, on February 7, 2020 at 7:36 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19
Okay so no judgment from this story please:

My fiancé has a ring he said he would use as a wedding ring so we don’t have to buy one for him. He has worn this ring many times before we got engaged. This ring was someone else’s wedding ring. My fiancé bought it off the guy when he was going through a divorce. It literally says “forever 02/06/02” on the inside. Thinking that he will be wearing a ring from another marriage that didn’t work is cringe-y to me. What do you think? I just want the ring to symbolize our marriage. Not a ring from a failed marriage and something he use to wear everyday before we got engaged.
I was thinking about moving the budget around and surprising him with a new ring. What would you do? Is it really that big of a deal? Is surprising him with a ring a good idea?

I got my fiance's wedding band from JC Penneys and I ended up getting it for like $50 on black Friday but I was there the other day to get a different size for him and they still had some great sales. His is tungsten. But I agree, I feel like wearing the ring would be bad juju lol

I agree with you. It doesn't even cost much sometimes. Ours were $90 each or so. We got tungsten which is relatively cheaper.

I would absolutely get him a new ring! My fiancé picked out a ring that was $150. So there are plenty out there that are on the cheaper side!

My ring is his grandmas engagement ring. I wish I knew what happened to his grandpas wedding band! I so wish I could surprise him with it but too afraid to ask FMIL about it😬

I’ll have to look for something similar!

I sold an old engagement ring from a bad relationship and the couple is still married today with four kids! I understand your feelings though. Doesn't make you feel all peachy inside.

The story behind him buying this ring is a head scratcher to me. It's strange to me, but I could probably ignore it if it didnt have the inscription.
I agree that men's rings aren't pricey. My fiances was maybe $150 and it has the Millennium Falcon engraved on it.

If your budget can afford it I would get him a new ring. Men’s rings are typically inexpensive depending on his taste. Only bc it has someone else’s wedding date inside and he was wearing my casually before you got engaged it wouldn’t sit right with me.

You can get a ring on amazon for $30. No way would my spouse wear a ring with someone’s failed anniversary date engraved in it.

I was on board until i heard about the engraving with a different date... He needs a different ring, or see if a jeweler can polish out the engraving (is that even possible??). Other than the engraving i see no issue with it.

Men’s wedding bands can be very inexpensive! My FIL bought one off Amazon for around $50 (maybe less). There is really no need to wear someone else’s. Buy him a new one!

I think it's really nice hes trying to save money for you guys and the wedding by giving this as an option but honestly I dont think having a wedding ring engraved with a failed marriage as a ring to symbolize your love is a good thingSmiley sad I think you can sit down together and show him options of rings that are still very nice and keep your budget manageable and gently let him know how him having that ring just doesnt make you feel right Smiley smile I think you can come up with a great ring that's right for him!

I agree with previous people about buying a new one but another option is to take that old ring to a jeweler and have the melt it down and create a new band with your wedding date inscribed on the inside. Just another thought.

I loooove Mod Gents! Got my rings soldered together super early because I get anxiety if things aren't planned out, and I've been wearing a set from them. Sent my mom a pic of my nails, and she called me demanding to know when we got a new diamond!!! But no. You really can't tell the difference just by looking at it- the quality is super high.

I would take it to a jeweler and get the date removed, it's normally on the cheap side, like $25-75. But men's bands can be even cheaper, like someone said .. $30 on amazon.

If not, if you are looking for unique rings at a decent price. I would recommend https://www.manlybands.com/

Good to know. I'm not the only one that gets anxiety when things are planned out. Hahaha. I know I have plenty of time, but I need to have things done now. So I have a plan and I can prepare the budget. I am glad that you say they are great quality because from a bridal expo my fiance and I one two free wedding bands, but they're all kind of simple and plain and I want to continue to wear my engagement ring. So I wanted something back. Goes well with that but I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars. So I saw that site and I figured those prices are amazing. I'm glad to hear that. It's great quality.

I get his reasoning as far as saving money but that would not be ok with me. I'd have to get him a new ring.
