Wedding ring question

brieliz, on July 31, 2016 at 5:34 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

So FH and I are starting to look for wedding bands. He already has his picked out (LOTR ring) and originally I budgeted $500-700 for my band. However, I've been going a little over budget in other areas and was thinking of getting a less expensive one and upgrading it on an anniversary later on. My FH kinda gave me a weird look and said "do people do that?" And so now I'm questioning it. Do people upgrade wedding bands, or is it similar to an engagement ring like the one you marry with is the one you have forever?

Yes people do it all the time.

I suggest looking on e-bay, we got all three rings at only a little higher than cost of gold & diamond. We saved a lot buying online.

I know people that have done that. I personally want to keep my same one but it's your personal preference.

My cousin has upgraded her rings like twice in the 7 or 8 years they've been married. I don't plan on doing it but if we hit the lotto...

Yes people upgrade their wings. FH and I are doing this, I have a super simple ring and will have a super simple band too. His will be a silicone ring bc of his job and then we plan to upgrade in a few years (5ish)

My mom has never owned a wedding band. She just wears her engagement ring. I didn't know about wedding bands until recently. So i think it's really a personal preference.

To a lot of people the wedding band is very sentimental and they would not want to replace the original. I have heard of "upgrading" the e-ring, and I have heard of an anniversary band, that's an upgrade or add-on to the wedding band, but not replacing the wedding band itself.

I'm thinking of doing this. My e ring is intricate but I can't wear stones to work so for now I'm wearing a silicone ring to work. For my wedding band I'd LOVE a marching band but I can't wear it for work and I definitely don't want to swap it out. So I'll get a plain band now and just take my e ring on and off with work. If I ever leave bedside nursing than I plan to upgrade my wedding band.

People definitely do upgrade, however I don't want to. FH put a lot of effort into my ering and I love it to pieces. In 10 years we might be able to afford a newer/bigger/shinier one, but this is the one that is the symbol of us taking the next step, so for me I don't want to upgrade it.

We have already upgraded my set though I don't plan to again for at least 10-15 years. It's totally a personal preference.

Our wedding bands are very sentimental. They are custom made and hand engraved. FH designed them and I can't bear the thought of upgrading them. I actually love them so much more than my E-ring.

I've know people who upgrade their engagement ring, but not wedding ring. It's definitely personal preference. When we picked out our rings we splurged a little more because we're planning on wearing it forever.

This is very common but personally I'm not a fan. The ring my FH puts on my finger is the only ring I ever want to wear. This is a very personal decision for each person.

We splurged on our rings and don't consider them as part of our wedding budget. You and your FH need to decide if you're upgrade people or not.

To cut costs, I don't even have a wedding band. I'll get one later.

I know lots of people are very sentimental about the band, but for some reason, the culture I'm from doesn't really put much emphasis on bands and lots of people never wear them...

My BFF has upgraded hers a couple years after she got married and once she got a good paying job. I definitely think it's personal preference. FH picked out an amazing engagement ring and bought the matching wedding band so I'll probably keep it forever.

Don't worry many people do that. Don't know if this is common but we will be upgrading my e ring as well...

People do it all the time! My moms e ring and band fit together, then she wears an anniversary bad with them. But, both of my grandmothers have upgraded both rings over the years.

    People definitely upgrade wedding bands.

I am in the same budget situation. I will be getting a thin band from etsy for about $60 and then on a future anniversary we will add another band, in kind of a stacking fashion. That way I get to keep the sentimental wedding band, eventually have what I want, and not overspend now.
