Wedding registry - how much stuff is too much?

Kathleen, on December 2, 2016 at 11:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

The FH and I started our wedding registry tonight. Needless to say, I was not prepared going into it and was not expecting to be that overwhelmed. Looking at countless dinner and silverware options drove me insane. That being said, the person we spoke with tonight stated we should have 2-3 gift options per person on our registry. We are having between 130-150 guests at our wedding. To me that sounds excessive, but is this the norm? We're trying not to add anything that we don't absolutely need or will use, but I still don't want to come across to our guests as extremely needy. Any and all advice is much appreciated.

I too have heard 2-3 gifts per person but that sounds insane when you think of it in terms of 100+ guests! I remember once printing out at a store for a friend's baby shower her 13 page registry and it felt like the most ridiculous thing and I certainly did not have the patience to go through the dang thing. In my case, I'm starting around 80 items (for 75 guesstimated final headcount) and plan to update it as we get closer (especially after my bridal shower, I heard that advice, too). Good luck! 2-3 gifts per person seems excessive to me too. 2-3 per couple sounds more reasonable. Maybe that's what they meant?

Seems like it should be 2-3 per household....are you registering somewhere that offers a completion discount?

They told us 2-3 per person with the reasoning that people usually buy more than 1 gift to either group together or because of attending both the bridal shower and the wedding. We're registering at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Target, and maybe Amazon. We were told by BBB that the have completion events every so often where you are given a discount on items that haven't been purchased, but the details got lost in our like 4 hour visit. I'm just wondering how many items are on a typical registry? The weddings I've been to recently didn't seem to have enough of a selection, but I don't want to go overboard.

We have 86 at target & 50ish at a local department store. We have 295 on the guest list. I will probably add more after my shower Depending.

    ETA 130 households

I think we currently have about 120ish. We have about 170 households we'll be inviting. We're hoping if everything on the registry is purchased before the wedding (some people are using it for Christmas gifts this year and bridal shower, obviously) that people will get the hint and gift us with money if they choose to do so.
