Wedding Reception food

Arlene, on October 10, 2021 at 8:16 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18
I'm a complete clutz and I don't want to spill anything on my wedding dress so I figured we'd have fancy bibs. The guests would even have one too to use and keep. I figured we could do southern tex/mex BBQ for the menu. Texas goulash, mac and cheese, BBQ chicken, BBQ pulled pork, street taco station, mashed potato station, coleslaw, corn bread and salad just to name a few.
My question is, will people think that's "low rent"?
Our invitations are going to be fancy scrolls and I guess I'm worried people will come expecting duck confit, Mahi Mahi or some boujee meal and be disappointed. These are foods the boo Thang and I love.I am probably over thinking it too lol. Help!!

In general, invitations set the tone for the event. Your food plan sounds delicious but very casual. I’d be totally caught off guard if I received a fancy invite and arrived at an event with that food and was handed a bib. I’d upgrade the food or change the invites.

I agree. The invitation is how you convey to guests the type of wedding they are attending. If I received a fancy scroll invitation I’d be expecting a very fancy event and meal.

Thanks ladies that's exactly what I was thinking! I can make a fancier menu but I wanted something other than typical wedding pasta dinner food.

A fancy scroll invite signals to me lots of high end food- seafood displays, lobster, filet mignon, etc. Which of course is going to be MUCH more expensive. The foods you wanted sound delicious- it’d be much easier (and MUCH cheaper) to change the invitations.

Yeah they will most assuredly not be getting filet minion and lobster but I can definitely class up the menu so it looks boujee!!!

I would probably simplify the invitations a little (maybe instead of fancy scrolls, a slightly more casual font)? Ultimately though, it’s your wedding, so if you love your invitations AND your menu, you can totally leave them! You could even maybe use your wedding website to help you create the vibe of the wedding, or you could also dress up your food a bit by serving the same food, but presenting it differently (maybe mini sliders, shooters, etc. like the photos you shared)

Your food idea sounds amazing. Honestly I would choose a different invitation rather than a different menu. Food is one thing that people really care about at weddings. The invitations (and all other stationary items) are just going to end up in the garbage.

We are having a country romance theme wedding the groomsmen and groom are wearing jeans vest and tie and boots, so we are having a country menu, bbq but we are having it presented in a elegant way,

These are really fun! Also just mini appetizers feel fancy. I think you can still have the scrolls if in the text somewhere you describe the vibe. Maybe in the dress code?

As a guest, I would never make any assumptions about the meal choice based on the invitation style, same with people we know. At the same time, you want food people will eat and enjoy and not everyone likes upscale food. As an example, I don’t eat chicken in banquet settings because it often is still mostly pink on the inside (very dangerous) while I love steak but would never expect anyone to serve that due to the price. The more expensive the food gets, the more exotic it gets so people are less inclined to eat it. Just because something is fancier doesn’t mean people have an interest in it. Stick to what they already know and enjoy, or you will have wasted money and food. Do not upgrade the menu if you know you and your guests won’t eat it.

Your existing menu sounds delicious. I don’t care that much for bbq outside of burgers or steaks, and bbq sauce on anything, but I can eat my weight in carne asada tacos and coleslaw.

Your menu sounds amazing! Rather than changing your menu I would change your invitation but I would also make sure your menu matches the formality of your wedding.

    Thanks ladies!
We are too deep in the invites to change them, plus I LOVE the ideas of a scroll.
I think I'm going to make my menu fancier in appearance but still food we love. Lots of small plates and skewered foods. Pulled pork sliders sounds so awesome to me. BBQ meatballs on skeweres, tomato with mozzarella and a sprig of basil. Truffle Mac and cheese. Poutin - shoe string cut French fries with a rich gravy and cheese crumbles served in a fancy glassHave the mashed potato bar with fancy glasses
I think if I make the menu look more upscale that will bridge the gap! I am close with the caterer so I can make that kind of change and it won't affect our pocket too much. But I just mostly want good food we'll love.
