Wedding postponed indefinitely

Leah, on August 22, 2021 at 10:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
So my husband and I got married prior to covid and were planning a big celebration for our anniversary… then covid happened and we postponed till oct now with things looking bad again we are looking to postpone indefinitely…. In the meantime my sister was planning a shower which we can cancel but what do I do about some of the gifts we were already sent… I feel like we should probably return them but we’ve already used some so how do I return those???

Don’t return them, I don’t think people would want them back, it’s still a gift celebrating your marriage.

You still got married. Your guests purchased the gifts to celebrate your marriage, not your wedding. Send thank you cards and keep them.

I was in a similar boat, and I had a lot of doubts about what to do. In the end, I decided to keep the gifts (as everyone I talked to in real life and on WW) assured me that I should keep them (and of course I had written nice thank you notes back when we received the gifts, so that was taken care of). I think you should keep and enjoy them!

I agree that you should accept the gifts given as gifts celebrating your marriage. Send prompt thank yous (which I see you are doing), and all is good. If you still have any lingering feelings of guilt, offer to return the gifts to the givers and I guarantee those givers will assure you they want you to keep the gifts.

Smiley love What about a drive-by celebration? People come by- you could both be dressed up and people come and say hi, if vaccinated or masked you could get pictures still, and people congratulate you. or an outdoor one next year when hopefully things have improved? (I would not return, I wouldn't expect anyone to have you return it either)

Well you're married! Write thank yous and use the gifts. Congrats! I'm sorry that Covid is still an issue.
