Do we hire a wedding planner before booking a venue?

Just got engaged last week and plan on getting married in 9-15 months from now. We live in northeast are looking for Florida or Caribbean destination wedding if Jan-March vs probably New England outdoor wedding April - June. I think we would benefit from a wedding planner, but not sure if it is best to hire someone who might not know the local vendors?

I think you're going to have to narrow down the location before you hire a planner. You should really hire a planner that is local to the place you're getting married in if possible because they'll already have working relationships with vendors, know about local weather patterns, be able to help with any potential language barriers if you're looking internationally, etc.

As previously suggested, wait until you decide where your wedding will be and then hire a planner in that area! The whole point of a planner is to do all the leg work and find you the best vendors and the best price. I think someone in the area you chose is going to be the best person for that job! And fyi, if you are thinking 'outdoor' wedding for Florida, January and February can get VERY cold !! (I live here) Have fun planning

Once you narrow down an area, shop around for venues. Our venue in Puerto Rico has a requirement that we use their specific wedding planner, so we got kind of lucky there.
