Wedding photography dilemma

mrssss, on June 19, 2019 at 6:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

What type of wedding photography are you choosing? I'm a little torn. I have a friend that has been doing photography for years and her style is the dark and moody type. I was originally wanting the light and airy type of photos but I do think she takes nice photos. I priced another photographer who does the light and airy type (don't know her personally), however she has not been doing photography for as long as my friend has. Nevertheless, her photos are still beautiful. In addition, my friends price is pretty much the same as the other photographer, however, my friend is only one photographer for 5 hours and the other photographer brings a second photographer and she photographs for 6 hours. We are having a small wedding (50-60 people) and not having a wedding party (besides our mothers and maybe sisters) so not sure if the second photographer matters.

Here's a pros and cons list I made for each photographer (lol):

Friend Photographer

Pros

Already comfortable with her since my fh and I know her

Many years of experience

Takes beautiful photos

Cons

Sole photographer (additional photographer w/ her will be over our budget)

Style is different than what I originally envisioned for my wedding

Five hours (should be enough time however other photographer offers 6 hours at same price)

Other Photographer

Pros

Light and airy style how I originally envisioned

Two photographers

An additional hour more than my friend photographer at the same price

Have not worked with her but seems nice

Cons

Only few years experience (2 years experience)

Don't know her personally so basing work ethic off of social media and few conversations we've had

Cannot find any reviews on her other than a few testimonials on her website

What are your opinions?

It sounds like the second one is a better option for you

I went light and airy. I had a similar comparison. I REALLY wanted to love this one photographer, but I just didn’t. Too dark, couldn’t picture myself as the bride.

When i I talked to my now booked photographer, she was super sweet and helpful. Just make sure to do a meet and greet to make sure you click.

Also, make sure to request a full wedding photo album from whatever photographer you’re considering. Thank goodness I did that or I’m sure I would have regretted my decision 😳😂

If you like 2nd photographer’s style better I would go with them. You don’t need to personally know a vendor for them to do a great job. While 2 years of experience is not a lot, if you checked all their reviews & social media & like what they do that’s most important. I would also ask them to send you 1-2 whole wedding albums to see how all photos look like & not just their top selected ones you see online.
Also 5 hours is not enough to capture the whole day unless you have a very short wedding. If you want to do any of getting ready photos, first look, or BP or family photos before the ceremony, 5 hours will not be enough.

Thanks for the advice. I understand how you felt. Smiley smile I really love my friends photos but I'm just not 100% positive of the style for my wedding day. I am thinking it's something I can look past but then I found the other photographer for the same price but I get a little more so I really started to question my decision to go with my friend. Decisions, decisions! Smiley smile

Thanks for the advice Iva. The only issue is that since she is so new, I couldn't find any reviews on her. I think asking for the entire wedding albums will help.

Our entire wedding is only 6 hours and I don't care about getting dancing photos so I thought 5 hours would be sufficient. Smiley smile

Photos are big and you don’t want to settle. You’ll know when it’s right. Also, I wouldn’t worry about how long they’ve been doing it for. I booked my videographer with her only doing literally 2 weddings. 2! And now she’s all sorts of booked!

I see... I personally don’t book vendors without reviews 😬 But that’s just me.
If you don’t care about pre-ceremony photos & you want photographer to start at the start of the ceremony, then 5 hours will be enough.
I still wouldn’t book a photographer if you don’t really like their style (I’m not a fan of dark & moody either). Maybe you can look for someone third just to compare? 🤷🏻‍♀️

If photography style really matters to you, go with that. (It does to me too, and I have to have dark and moody lol)

I would absolutely regret not booking the photographer with the style I wanted.

In fact I sat next to a [drunk] girl at a friend's wedding who contemplated cancelling her wedding [5 months out] and rescheduling it when the photographer she wanted was available. And that's why I booked my photographer before I booked anything else. Lol.

Lol. Thanks Mandi! I don't dislike the dark and moody type, it's pretty, just not what I originally envisioned so that's why I'm so unsure. Thanks for the advice! Smiley smile

The dark and moody look is pretty, but also a fad. In 50 years, what images do you want your grandchildren to see? I personally prefer a classic style because it doesn’t date your wedding (like my moms orange bridesmaid dresses and powder blue suits!). I would go with your gut on this one....style matters a lot!
