wedding Makeup and hair

on March 29, 2021 at 2:22 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 20
Hi all!

I’m really feeling defeated! I have done 3 makeup and hair trails with 3 different vendors and none of them met my expectations. Either the makeup made me look like a drag queen or my eyelashes fell off 1 hour post application. One of the vendors did my hair look like crap- like I just rolled out of bed and put my in a bun I could just do myself. I’m really starting to feel like I need to learn how to do my own makeup for my wedding because no one else is cutting it! I’m not even being demanding I’m not asking for anything crazy. But when you can’t even draw eyeliner on straight and I’m paying you like $300 for a trail - this is insane!
I NEED HELP! I just want to look amazing on my wedding day! If anyone know any good makeup artist or hair person around Schaumburg area please shoot me some contacts! At this rate I’m getting pretty desperate enough to just try to wing my own makeup for the big wedding day. Haha

$300 for a single trial is way too much and you shouldn't have been asked to pay that by anyone. Day of services barely cost that much in many areas.

Take a look at Yelp and Instagram in your area but do not pay $300 for a trial. Do you have a regular hairdresser who can do it for you or someone they recommend?

I been paying $240- $150 for both hair and makeup trials I have done 3 trials so far! These trials are getting Pretty expensive. I feel like I could’ve paid for the entire hair and makeup for everyone on the wedding day with these trials! Haha.

This one vendor around this area had really good review was asking for $350 for hair and makeup trial, just for the trial only not part of the wedding package. I thought that was a little expensive so was hesitant to book. At this rate I’m getting a little desperate might need to reach out to this overly priced vendor.

I live in Chicagoland suburbs. I’m 3 months out till my wedding day and hair/makeup is my last vendor to find. I’m starting to panic! Thanks so much for your suggestion!

Vendors charge higher costs because they know that most brides won't blink and will pay anything without thinking twice. Go on thumbtack.com which is lower priced than the rest. Or make an appointment at Ulta/Sephora.

I’ll have to look into the stores also closest ones are 45 to an hour but maybe there is one closer to my venue.
    Thanks !!

Thanks! I will look into Ulta and Sephora. I need my makeup and hair person to be able travel to the hotel because my mother and mother in law and the girls need makeup and hair too. It would just be easier. Thanks for the advice! Appreciate it.

    She's located in Palatine.
Honestly i wouldnt trust sephora or ulta with wedding makeup unless you are going more simple.

I ran into a similar issue. I really liked one HMUA but trials were $175, day of was $250 (for one service). Have you asked your vendors, or any friends who have been married? Your regular salon may also know someone who does hair & makeup on the side or independently.

Have you been checking out their instagrams/portfolios before booking? You could also see if they included details of their clients and stalk THEIR instagrams to get a better of idea of how the makeup looked throughout the day. Often you can find other vendors that way who might ALSO share photos of the makeup (photographers especially) which can give you a better idea of how your makeup might look if you chose them! It's a bit of a rabbit hole to go down but it an help!

I'd do all of that before doing a trial. Also, I live in Sydney Australia but $300 for a makeup or hair trial is pretty expensive. I suppose if they're doing both in the one then maybe...

This might sound crazy but if you aren’t having any luck with professionals it can’t be to crazy of a suggestion. Reach out to nearby cosmology schools. Some of the girls/guys today KNOW about good makeup. Some of these schools and colleges post job forums for the students looking for side work. Maybe they can even recommend a student.

I’m not sure what locations in Chicago you are searching, but I looked up and found Crystal-eyes makeup and beauty. Girl! I would love to have them do my makeup for my wedding day! And they can travel to you for hair and makeup! I’d personally try them. Their photo galley is phenomenal.

I had a terrible experience with my trial too! She was crazy expensive but the company had glowing reviews so I figured it would be worth it.
    This is what I learned:

    1. Don't go for a bridal makeup company that has many artists. The pictures you see on their social media are done by their "head artist" or the owner, so unless you specifically ask for them, chances are, you will get someone else that you never had a chance to see the work of.
    2. If the bridal makeup and hair artists didn't work out for you, look for makeup artists in a different field. I ended up going with a makeup hair duo that does magazine and editorial shoots. Because I realized the bridal makeup companies generally disregard your requests and do the typical bridal look that they sell the most. The editorial artists are usually fraction of the price too.
    Good luck❤

Thanks for all the comments! Y'all have been super helpful! So I just got into contact with a vendor that has very good reviews and was recommended by another vendor that was already booked for my date. After 3 failed trials with 3 different vendors. I'm just tired and losing hope of finding a good make-up/hair artist.

So I was given the bridal package quote of $1300 not including 20% gratuity that will be added to the final bill which will come out to approx $1500 something -question is this expensive for wedding hair and makeup? This includes hair and makeup for my mother, mother in law and 2 bridesmaid, so 5 individuals including myself. I don't know if this is considered over priced or the norm for wedding hair and makeup. Any Thoughts?

This really depends on your area, but I’m in a high cost of living city & this is about what I’m seeing (also for 5, although a few people won’t be getting both services).

I have found cheaper, but not by much.
Make sure any travel fees or other fees are included (I found one with an additional admin fee, for example).

Thanks Jay! I'm from the Chicagoland suburbs. I think this price is on the higher end. I forgot to ask about traveling fee being included. It should be for $1300! Haha.

I'm facing the same issue. especially since I do my own makeup pretty well and am that VIB Rouge level customer lol. I don't know what it is but I can't find a makeup artist to fit my expectations and not for the outrageous prices they are charging just for a wedding! I also am having a hard time find MUA's who have Black women in their portfolios.

I’ve only had one trial for hair and makeup and didn’t love my makeup either. Way too much!! I even tried telling her I don’t like the ‘fake’ look. I would almost rather do my own, but we already signed a contract. She did say I could use my own foundation, after me not loving my first 2 attempts (airbrush, then bare minerals). :-( I’m sorry it’s not going so well for you either. I would suggest finding colors (eyes, lips) that work for your skin and hair.

Jenn! That's awful. That's like the worst feeling to book with a vendor you having second thoughts about and is now regretting. Since she is a professional she should be able to mix foundation to best match it to your skin! Instead of using your own foundation. That's just shows she doesn't know what she is doing! When is your wedding date? I hope things turn out well on your day. That's like my fear being stuck with a make up and hair artist who doesn't care because you already paid! LoL

So I think I have decided on a vendor. My total came out to $1700 for myself and 3 other individuals for hair and make up. I think this is way too expensive but I don't know how to do my o,wn make up or hair lol.
