Wedding Invite via text message?

CrystalQueenB, on March 12, 2016 at 3:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

I got a text from my cousin and I'm still a little confused by it! She asked what was I doing memorial day weekend. I asked her what it was in reference to. She said she's having a small ceremony that Saturday morning and wanted to know whether or not she should invite me. Huh? WTF? I mean I don't get it. I'm only invited if I say I don't have any plans that weekend. My brain is still trying to process this. ETA: My graduation is that following week, so I guess I won't get an invite. I thought that was the whole purpose of invitations?

Lol wow! Very informal wedding I guess! Tell her an invitation will help you decide!

Yeah, that's pretty casual and weird. Its like, "if you're not doing anything else... also bring me a gift"

and not "It would mean a lot for you to be there"

I thought it was weird too. My mom got the same text message, and rsvp via text. I guess that was the invite (sort of). @Nastassia it definitely feels like a slap in the face.

My mom also said "I hope it's not a hot mess"

    My response "Too late"

Now I'm just wondering if it's even worth the trip to New York. I don't want to hurt her feelings. The whole thing was really tacky and obnoxious!

At least it wasn't a mass FB invite. Trying to think of something positive here.

@Rebecca I don't know the details yet. @OKD that would've been a real shit show lol.

Mom told me to just show up and bring a gift! She's family blah blah blah. I really do adore my cousin (she's such a sweetheart), she just went about it all wrong. I guess I'll see if FH wants to make the 4 hour drive.

Sounds like someone is trying to save money on invitations for people who won't be able to come

As her ceremony is a small one, it sounds like she's trying to get ahead of possible declines to invite people she would love to have there when it's time to send invites. If any of my cousins did that I wouldn't think anything of it.

Just shaking my head. So what was the point of sending the text?

I imagine this is her way of avoiding having a "B" list since she is having a small ceremony. Making sure that her guest count are guests that can actually make it. It's odd, but I can at least get her possible logic behind it.

Yeah it sounds strange to me. Why not just send an invite and await your response?

Cut her a little slack, maybe she's on a really tight budget and can't afford a huge amount of invites so is trying to just get an estimate on how many she needs. I think saying obnoxious is over the top

IDK it's not like it was a mass text, and Memorial Day Weekend isn't too far away, so it's not unlikely that you might have already had plans. It sounds like she was just trying to figure out who could actually go. Now, if it had said "See you on ----- for my wedding! That's the date! Reply if you can come!" that would be a different feeling.
