Wedding Invitation Divorced parents

Lucy, on January 26, 2017 at 10:37 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

So my parents have been divorced for over 20 years now. They despise each other. They have both remarried. I am not allowing my stepfather to come due to issues longer than I can post. My dad and stepmom are hosting the wedding at their house and paying for everything. My mom is helping with nothing. She is invited to come but she isn't helping me with anything. My Dad and stepmom are working so hard to make this day special for me. Everything I read says I should list my mom first on the invitation. I don't want list my stepfather at all. I dont' want to make things worse by not listing my mom at all, but I don't think she should be first since it is being held at their house. Any advice on how I should word the invite. I don't want to just put the parents of because I want to recognize my dad and stepmom and since it is at their home, I feel like their names should be on the invite. They are sacrificing a lot to do this for me. Any words of wisdom to help would be great

I would suggest either putting both on the invite or none at all.

If you are having it at your stepmom's and dad's house, then they will be mentioned on the invite anyways since it is at their house. I suppose you don't have to list your stepfather if you don't want to, but if you don't want to start any drama then I would maybe list neither and give a special mention to your stepmom and father.

Who ever is paying for the wedding gets listed. Don't feel bad for not listing your mom and stepdad.

Or you could always use "together with their parents" which is ambiguous enough to not offend anyone.

You could always skip the parents part up top all together and add a line down by where the address is that it is at the home of Dad and Stepmom

The people hosting are listed on the invite. Your mom is not hosting. You do not need to list her name.

We did together with our families because of a similarly complicated family situation and because we had multiple sets of parents contributing. You could do that if you don't want to start a problem with your mom.

I went against what I read and listed my dad first. He raised me and is paying for a lot of the wedding. Mom came second and I put her a row down since they are divorced. I also listed FH mom and dad on separate rows since they are divorced. We left off his step Dad since FH and him don't get along. Here is what mine says. Edits to FH parents still need to be made.

I would put your Dad and step mom first and then your Mom down below. Like I did with my aunts name.

Oh em gee. I feel like I wrote this post! Everything to a T. I also do not get along with my stepfather, but i have accepted the fact he is with my mom. They arent helping with wedding either. Mom keeps trying to push me to have stepdad in wedding but he isnt MY dad. He is invited. Thats it. My dad and stepmom are both hosting wedding at their house and are going above and beyond. I get where you are coming from.

Traditionally, the mother was listed first on the invite to the ceremony, and you could do separate reception invites. No need to list any stepparents. I know many people here just do one invite, for both, but it may make more sense for you to separate ceremony and reception invites.

    For ceremony, just do

    Mrs John Doe

    Mr. James Smith

    blah blah blah

and on the reception invite do Mr and Mrs james Smith

If the ceremony is also at their house, I don't know what to do. Sorry.

My parents are divorced as well. I found it easier to use "Together with their families...". This way everyone was technically included and there would be no issues on which names were listed first.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Glad I'm not the only one dealing this type situation, but sad anyone else has to either! I think I will go similar to the sample invite looks above. The abusive alcoholic stepdad isn't going to be listed or invited. He has caused tension with my mom and her kids for years. At least this way though, I'm recognizing my mom. Probably going to list my dad and stepmom as Mr & Mrs. and just list my Mom's name right below. My Dad and stepmom have been so sweet about it and told me to do it however I feel comfortable. I wish my Mom would follow their lead on all of this and not be demanding. After all they are inviting her to their house, that should have been sacrifice enough! :-) I'm probably stressing about it more than they are, but they've dealt with a lot of abuse of the years from my mom and all of us kids. They sacrifice a lot for us kids all the time. They've definitely earned a place of honor, even though they would never ask for it! Very blessed to have them.

Best of luck to everyone dealing with similar situations and any upcoming nuptials!

The person/people actually paying are the only ones that go on the invite

@Ms. Rose- I disagree. FH parents are not paying for anything but I added them out of respect. They are still his parents.

That sounds perfect! I would definitely include your step mom contrary to what @Karen said. I was extremely close to my step father for 23 years. He would have walked me down the aisle had he not passed away. Step parents should definitely be included if they are a big part of your life.

My mom is helping me and dad is not. The situation is completely reversed in my case. My mom suggested skipping the family part as if we were hosting alone. As long as your dad is okay with it, then I would just leave it off.
