That was a really interesting read. Made me all the more thankful I live in Texas!

@danilaughs- right! We live in DC but are getting married in Kansas City. We couldn't afford a wedding here even if we wanted to!

Everything seems so expensive for me here. Wine country - Bay Area - California. It's a destination wedding place with all these vineyards around so finding a location was nearly impossible.

I literally just forwarded this to my parents so that they could understand a little better!

I got married in 1977 for about $2,500. I got married again in 2009 for $10,000. Let's just say that I had to be a lot more careful with money the second time around.

Honestly, I don't think it's that much different that car inflation, house inflation, college inflation...all of which effect vendor inflation. You're talking over 40 years ago.....

Between inflation and the increase in standards (everyone used to get married in very simple halls), it is VERY different today. My mom keeps telling me I should have my wedding at the firehouse hall we had my engagement party at. What most people in NY are having as an engagement party was a full on wedding back then!

Lol, my dad was in literal shock when I told him the church we originally wanted to get married in (the same church my parents got married in) was $3200 for just the ceremony. He said when they got married there, it was $65. This was 33 years ago.

Vanessa brings up a very, very good point. The very media that has 'exposed' wedding inflation is the same media that talks couples into embellishing very step of the process in ways we simply didn't have (or consider) when I got married 30 plus years ago. There were no STD's, no video, no bridal proposal boxes, no dancefloor monograms, no after parties, no second wedding dresses....

    You get my drift.

That is horrifying, and not at all surprising. I can't wait to show this to our parents so they can stop telling us we are being ripped off. lol

Ugh, those numbers make me sick but it's all very real! If it weren't for the help of my parents I'd be going to city hall and calling it a day!

@Celia I agree sooo much that the extra stuff is unnecessary and has really taken away from the intimate feeling of a wedding joining two people. While I honestly don't buy into most of that stuff I AM going with a wedding venue over a cheap hall because having things run smoothly and everything being taken care of is important to me. You really just have to stay focused on what is and is not important and you can easily keep your budget much lower than what the article states is normal in San fran. I'm doing it in NY (which is a comparable market).

I read this article too! Amazing how much has changed, and doesn't make me feel so bad that I didn't stay below my original $3000 budget!
