Wedding Guest: Unusual or Crazy Weddings?

AJ, on July 12, 2021 at 1:46 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 17

Has anyone ever been to any unusual weddings, or have seen anything crazy go down at a wedding like in a movie? (i.e: an objection, fight, awkward speech?) I haven't personally been to a lot of weddings so I don't have any fun stories, but would love to hear if anyone else does!

Hi ! Never been to such a wedding but heard of a ceremony where the groom said "no" just because he had made a bet with his buddies...

Oh my, that is horrible! If my groom did that I think I would just walk right out.

I haven't seen anything too crazy, like in a movie, go down either! One wedding I went to had a roast instead of traditional toasts during the reception, so multiple people said things instead of just the best man and maid of honor. It was actually quite fun!

I didn’t personally attend this wedding, but made wedding cakes! I made and helped decorate a 5 tier cake with a 6 inch side cake covered in gold leaf. When we arrived to the venue it was all outdoors and under a tent with no sides. The TABLES were flipping over, plates breaking from wind, and the sky was dark dark dark. Heard that it was a total disaster for the poor bride. I felt bad for her but also when she would come to consultations she would say things like “I want whatever is the most expensive and extravagant since we have so much money to spend”. Still feel bad for her though, what a nightmare!

At a wedding my husband was in, the bride and groom got into a drunken screaming match halfway through the reception and the groom stormed off. Then at the end of the reception the groom went back to their room and the bride went to the hotel bar with some of her friends.

At my cousin's wedding, their vendors were...interesting, to say the least. The officiant did like a Princess Bride themed ceremony (I'm assuming the bride requested this because I KNOW my cousin did not) but he just made it all kind of awkward the way he did everything. We were all very lost and like, "what is happening?!" The photographer there was OBSESSED with my shoes because I wore a black dress and did hot pink accents, so I had hot pink heels on and he was literally laying on the ground taking pictures of my shoes instead of photos of the wedding. My FH pointed out later that he may have had a foot fetish the way he was acting...but I chose not to think that way because it creeped me out!

Then at one of my friend's weddings, she had her cousin there, not part of the wedding, but she has 3 kids and they were part of the wedding...she took the photographer away from the posed photos after the ceremony to take family photos of her family since they were all dressed up. My friend was NOT happy with that and it caused an argument, which kind of made the rest of the night a little awkward for her family!

That is creepy! I wouldn't want to think of that way either, I wouldn't be happy if I was your friend either - photographers are EXPENSIVE!!! I would have sent the family who did that a portion of the bill to pay.

The only crazy thing was the bride in a BAD mood. Threw a tantrum when anyone tried to talk to her or the groom and then was pissed when no one danced to their homemade playlist of non danceable music. Also this was an LDS wedding so 9am ceremony for couple and attendants only for 2 hours while both families sat awkwardly in the temple lobby. No food served at all the entire weekend except super dry cake at the 6pm church gymnasium reception that guests were expected to decorate before sitting down to celebrate.

I think one of the coolest things I saw at a posh country club wedding in the 90s was at the dinner reception the “couple’s video” of them growing up was playing and it ended with highlights from their wedding ceremony like an hour earlier! Like that was crazy fast editing.

    We're theatre people.

So, we've been to a wedding where the bride and groom had a swordfight. (The groom is an actual master in Italian Longsword fencing, but the bride won, as he pledged his sword to her.)

We were the ones where my bridesman got possessed by A Particularly Famous Villain, enchanted our friends into fighting us, and we had to sword fight and tag-team our way through 5 of our friends before fighting my bridesman.

Other friends did a skit for their ceremony. Partly on purpose, partly because their officiant NEARLY didn't get his paperwork on time.

We've also seen a truly choreographed dance (the bride is a trained dancer), with the cute added bonus of the groom being walked down the aisle by his (very smol) niece. (SHE WAS SO PROUD and it was painfully adorable.)

Oh, and DH went to a wedding (I, uh, had work) where the MOB was nearly murdered by the bride, the BP, and some of the guests, because she is just that awful to be around. (There's a reason I had, uh, work. The MOB was one of them. One of the BP, a good friend, was like, YEP, YOU WOULD HAVE ACTUALLY DONE IT. Me: That's why I, uh, had work.) Either that, or the MOG, who took over wedding planning and made it all about her and her friends. (Honestly, I think the disaster that was the wedding planning made the couple closer and work on their relationship in a healthier way than when they were engaged, so ... silver linings?)

    And a funny one:

I was a reader at a wedding where the bride wore a 'non-traditional' dress (i.e. she bought a white cocktail dress off the rack), and her one BM, who lived far away, went and got a cocktail dress in the color the bride picked. ....It was the same dress. (No one was upset, everyone found it quite funny, and also, oh, hey, maybe they are that close friends because they like the same things!)

Oh my word, have I ever....

I can name exactly one that was the most outrageous.

It starts at 9:00am, when the bride fired the makeup artists on the doorstep because she decided they'd shown up too early to do the makeup for her, her six bridesmaids, and the two mothers.

It continues at 4:00pm, when the ceremony doesn't start because she is not ready.

It continues at 5:00pm, when she keeps having meltdowns that she needs a moment to "meditate" (smoke weed) on the property's front lawn... every ten or fifteen minutes.

It is still going at 7:00pm, when she finally comes out and the ceremony finally starts.

It doesn't end at 9:15pm, when all of her guests are served cold food because it was served three hours late.

It also doesn't end at 10:00pm when, despite the noise ordinance, she tells the DJ to keep playing, and when the neighbors show up to complain about the noise, she starts screaming at them to "GET THE F%%% OUT, THIS IS MY F%%%ING WEDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

It does, however, finally stop at 10:05pm, when the cops show up to enforce the noise ordinance and stop just short of unplugging the DJ's equipment.

I also witnessed a wedding back when I worked at a hotel where the groom and father of the bride got into a literal fist fight and both were arrested.

I have no words for that experience, that bride sounds like an absolute nightmare and I'm surprised guests actually stuck around for that!

It was, by far, the worst wedding experience I've ever had. I was a vendor (I used to assist my husband filming) and by 6:00pm, the guests were starting to get nasty with us about "why hasn't this started yet?!" As if we had any control whatsoever.

My uncle's wedding when I was about 18 or 19. The ceremony was nice, but after the BP went out on a party bus to take photos and get wasted... and wasted they were. My uncle was in his 30s and I think the bride was too, but the MOH was a girl I graduated with (not sure why the bride was great friends with a 19 year old) and she was completely gone. During her speech she could barely stand up and was just mumbling incoherent things so one of the groomsmen just picked her up and carried her away.
