Wedding Guest Attire

I wouldn't try to dictate what your guests can wear. You can recommend a color or group of colors, but at the end of the day they should be allowed to wear whatever they want.

I would just say recommend light colors, but know that some people might not listen. I would say something like While we would like everyone to be comfortable, we would recommend wearing light/pale attire. I wouldn't recommend specific colors though. Some people may still choose to wear dark colors, but that's their choice.

What color are your bridesmaids wearing?

Like PP said, you can recommended colors, but people will just wear what they want. It's not going to be that important, it's not like you'll be taking a group picture with all your guests so what does it matter if they're all coordinated?

Some people DO take group pictures with all of their guests, but I agree with you that the guests do not need to be color-coordinated. Aesthetics or "vision" are never more important that the actual people involved.

That said, for beach wedding it IS nice to make sure people know it's on the beach so they can choose the appropriate footwear, for practicality reasons.

Please don't do this. If it's not black, many people won't have suitable clothes in that color or even that family of colors, and you don't really want to make everyone buy new clothes for your wedding.
