Wedding gifts...checks specifically

Dana, on September 14, 2019 at 8:25 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18
I'm just curious...
We got married last Saturday.
We received both money and check as gifts. Very grateful.
My questions are ...
How long did you wait before you deposited them? Immediately..waited?
Did you send out a thank you and than deposit?

In PA the marriage certificate takes some time to bs sent out, so I can't do much as far as name change. I have to pay and apply for a physical certificate.

So we will deposit them in my husbands account. Just want to do what's right.

If it were me and FH receiving checks, we'd probably deposit them as soon as possible. And then send thank you cards out to everyone who sent a gift!

    And thank you!
That's probably what we'll end up doing.
I actually wrote the thank you letter and chose my photo while sitting on the beach!!!!
So I'll send it out next week when we return from our familymoon (we brought our 6 month old!)

I got married in PA but we had a joint account before the wedding. We deposited all our checks in there the Monday after the wedding. So as soon as we possibly could. I sent out thank yous that week. Also, I had the original certificate and waited to go purchase the certified copy for the marriage license. When I went to the SS office and DMV they both took the original. Just saying you may not have to wait to get the certified copy. However, it could have just been 2 people that didn't care one way or the other lol. Congratulations!

    That's so odd!
I called the Media PA court house, and they said until the form was sent out and filled out by the officiant - I couldn't order a certificate. I'd have to wait, blah blah.
It is what it is. That whole area will work out.
    Thank you for the reply!!

Yup. I waited to get the certified copy because I read conflicting information about what I needed to change my name. When I went to do it, they said they would accept either.

Definitely deposit them as soon as possible. If you wait too long, people might assume it's been taken already and it might mess up their accounting.

We went to Fl. immediately after, but it was only for a few days and we cashed the big one when we got back. The bank gave us a hard time because it had both our names on it and my name hadn’t been changed yet AND he changed his name, but the bank had his old name still. We brought in his name change paper and I think they let us deposit it.
The rest got deposited into our joint account once I had my name changed. It was a couple of weeks later.

We deposited them ASAP, before leaving for our honeymoon. We didn't want that much money laying around while we were gone. We also didn't want to mess up anyone's banking.

    I'd definitely deposit checks asap.
We deposited them in his account at Chase and because I hadn't changed my name yet and the checks said Mr. And Mrs. NewLastName, they let me just sign it as the new name even though I wasnt legally changed yet.

I would deposit ASAP. I hate giving someone a check and waiting weeks for them to deposit it.

We deposited ASAP. We added me to my husbands bank account and had no issues depositing them with my last name not being changed yet.

We set up a joint account in case someone sends a check to either or both of us.

But especially since people can’t seem to write my name as they see it printed.

So, we’ll be able to deposit it either way.

Open a joint account. Changing names on bank accounts won't stop you from opening a joint one. Deposit all checks within 2 weeks of getting them. Write thank you letters withing 2 weeks of getting the checks, or within 2 weeks of returning from your honeymoon. You may still get more gifts, as wedding gifts are properly sent to the home before or after the wedding, not brought there. And particularly with big checks, some people want to make sure the wedding happened ( and was not annulled or broken up immediately ) before giving money that could be cashed by the other person than the one they are friends of, or relatives. And often after the wedding you get gifts from people who are emotionally close, but were unable to attend. So ones that are later , just thank them within 2 weeks of receipt, though they may not come for months .

I would deposit them ASAP. You can open a joint account even without being married. My fiancé and I have had one for years. And depending on your bank, they may not even notice/care that it’s made out to your maiden name. I occasionally get checks in my former married name, even though I changed it back to my maiden name when I divorced six years ago. My bank has never questioned the name. I think it would only be an issue if someone complained it was cashed by the wrong person, but you are still you no matter what name you go by.

We deposited ours immediately after. I personally hate when I gift a check and the person takes 1 month or longer to deposit it. We sent thank you cards after.
