Wedding Gift

Lauren, on December 10, 2019 at 3:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

My boss gave me a wedding gift, a Visa Gift Card. Except it appears to have been opened. I tried to check the balance on it online but it kept coming back with an error. I tried to call the number on the card to see how much was on it. They said they couldn't discuss it with me unless I knew the preloaded amount. I tried to use it yesterday at a store and it didn't work.

What do I do? Should I give it back to my boss and tell him it doesn't work? Should I just forget about it? It feels weird because he obviously thinks he gave me some amount of money but I will never be able to use it.

I personally would just send a thank you card for the gift card and leave it at that. I would imagine any conversation regarding it not working would be awkward (and embarrassing!) for all involved.

Gift cards have to be opened to activate them. Is there a website on the back where you can check the balance? It is possible that when he bought it, the store did not activate it properly which would cause it to not work or show a balance. I would hate to bring it up but I would also hate for him to have paid for something and did not get it.

On a side note, we received a bunch of gift cards as wedding gifts and had them come up as declined/invalid in quiet a few big name stores which was surprising since we knew they had a balance. If you order anything online, try it there and see if it works.

    Good luck!

I checked the website and it said it didn't recognize the card. I can't use it to order anything online because I would need a name and billing address associated with the card.

I guess I just have to forget about it but it is odd that he would give me a blank gift card.

I would just send a thank you card and pretend it worked. It's too awkward to hand it back saying it doesn't!

That is weird. I have never had to provide any of that when using a gift card.

Does he have a secretary or someone that you are more comfortable asking about it or could have even possibly bought it for him. I do agree that it is probably best to just send the thank you card regardless but it is very odd lol

Let it go and just smile and say thanks! It’s not a serious enough situation to make a deal of it.

When purchasing anything online, websites usually just require the billing address and name. Because it is a Visa gift card, it should work with your information, since that info is not known when the card is made. I've had a couple for like birthday gifts, and just used my normal business address, and they went through alright. I hope that makes sense.

I'm sending a thank you anyway. I would just hate to think what amount he thinks is on there just goes to waste.

Yeah unfortunately there isn't much he can do unless he saved the receipt, which I doubt?

Was it a Vanilla Visa gift card? I know those cards can get hacked fairly easily. My grandmother gave my sister-in-law one year with $100 on it, but when my sister-in-law went to use it, there wasn't anything on there. I've heard a lot of other people online say that same thing happened to them with those. I hate that for you! I guess I'd just send a thank you note because it'd seem awkward for me to say something.
