Wedding Gift (no cash or gift cards)

Mrsbdg, on August 6, 2019 at 10:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

My husband's long-time friend just got engaged last weekend and due to reasons I shouldn't discuss they are getting married in two weeks.

In that short of time she mentioned she wasn't registering or even expecting any gifts (friends and family are sprawled throughout the world). We still want to get them a decent size gift since they are so meaningful to him ($125-$150) however in their culture it can be considered rude (or impersonal) to gift cash/gift cards (my old stand-by as a wedding gift!).

I don't know what to gift them! My husband has no idea what to get them and I'm at a loss since one of my favorite wedding gifts was a $30 T-Rex cookie jar (yes, I'm the epitome of class and elegance). My husband doesn't know if they enjoy cooking. He knows they are not outdoorsy. They like going out, they are really big into dancing, music, and traveling. Ideas?

Hmm...that's tricky! Most of the things I thoughy of are gift card related!
I was going to suggest gifting them like vouchers for a dance class or some fun dancing event. Maybe concert tickets if theres a music group they really enjoy that's coming near you soon?.

If they are not into cooking a crock pot with a crock pot recipe book. Crock pots are great for people who don’t like to cook.

Hahaha yes! Sweet-asarus Rex is the centerpiece of our table and everyone loves him when we host friends.

    Thanks for the recommendations!

Waffle maker with waffle mix, maple syrup (etc). We got a waffle maker at my bridal shower and now make brunch every weekend. It’s a fun new thing to do together 😊

I agree!!! I have nothing to add as a gift card to a favorite restaurant or good old cash is always my go to as well. I re-read the original post and I got nothin'!!!!

I love putting together gift baskets that have a few personal touches to let them know you really thought about the gift but in the long run it still included a gift card for them to use some of the gift how they choose. For example: I love making a date night gift basket. I would put in it some of their favorite candy, popcorn, (maybe a blue ray that I think theyll enjoy, but usually a $50 gift card to the local movie theater), along with some other fun things I know they like. Maybe I'd put it all in a picnic basket that comes with plates and glasses and an expensive bottle of wine along with Google directions to your favorite park to watch the sunset. It gives it a real personal touch then.

I also love the suggestion of luggage since they travel. That stuff is expensive.

Are they going on a honeymoon? If so, maybe you could put together a honeymoon themed gift basket.

Maybe buy them a dance lesson or two, if that’s something they’re into. Or buy them tickets to a music festival! If they’re going on a honeymoon, maybe buy them something appropriate for where they’re going. Everyone bought my brother and sister in-law clothes for their honeymoon in Aruba. If not a nice gift basket would be another good idea!

Luggage or luggage tags would probably be a super cool gift if they travel.
You could look into a bose speaker if they like music, or another high end quality music playing device. Noise cancelling headphones for flying and music would be good.
Where it's a quick wedding they might understand if you do cash, you could write them a nice note saying you were so excited you couldn't think about a gift and they might get a good laugh.
Trex cookie jar would be a good gift IMO 🤣

We’ve got people a groupon for a hotel before! They can pick the weekend that works for them, it just has to be within the right time frame. It’s not really a “gift card” to me.

Maybe one of those maps that they can hang in their home as decor where they can track where they've been? My H's grandparents have one and it is always a fun point of conversation! I hope this makes sense...it made sense in my head lol.
