Wedding Favors: Edible or No?

Charlotte, on November 6, 2019 at 5:14 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
Hey everyone!

My fiance and I threw around some ideas for wedding favors. We like the idea of doing succulents but I've been thinking about doing something else? Do you think edible wedding favors go over better over something materialistic?

If you were a guest what would you prefer? We thought about doing succulents if we went the non edible route. If we did something edible we thought about macarons or doing a s'mores kit. Thoughts?

Edible favors usually go over much better than non-edible. They are more practical since most people like cookies, candy, etc.; whereas, a lot of people don't care for non-edible items especially if it has the couple's information on it. Succulents are cute but they aren't for everyone and they may be difficult to transport if you have OOT guests.

People on these forums really love edible favors, but they’re hit or miss to me. Between a succulent and a s’mores kit, I’d rather a succulent — I think a s’mores kit is adorable and a love s’mores when I’m camping, but...realistically, I’m not going to go home and roast myself a marshmallow to make a s’more— and there are a lot of edible favors that still end up in the trash. Bottom line is. You won’t please everyone, and edible or not, some people won’t take favors, some will but won’t hold on to them, and some will but will LOVE them. So just chose what you like best that’s in the budget (if you want to do a favor).

I didn’t care much about favors, but my husband REALLY wanted to give something *useful* — so we ended up with nice corkscrews. They’re not for everyone — most people already own one or don’t need one if they don’t, or have a specific type they prefer ...but, we figured, still cute enough for a keepsake. Not everyone took one, but a pretty good number of people did. I know of a small handful of people who still use them and get excited about telling us that, and that’s good enough for me!

If I had that s'more packet at the end of your wedding (or anyone's wedding) I would squee like a little girl. So cute and delicious.

I would definitely say go with something edible! We'll be talking with our bakery about putting something together for our guests. Out of your 2 edible options, I would probably go with macarons.

Edible is a safer bet. Macaroons sound better than s’mores kit because it’s less work involved for the guest.

Succulents might be hard for people that need to travel, and not everyone is good at (it wants to) take care of a plant.

For us, we will be doing little bottles of olive oil.

Absolutely edibles are the way to go or you risk a lot of leftovers. The s’mores are adorable but macaroons are much more practical and still fancy fabulous—that’s my vote.

Edible for sure. We did the s’mores and we had a lot left. I think macaroons would be better.

I love edible favors. They make a great snack for the ride home. I also hate nick-nacks. I’ve thrown out so many beer koozies, corkscrews, and cheap picture frames than I can count. While the thought is nice, I find it to be a waste of money. My best advice is that if you don’t give edible favors, make a donation to your favorite charity in lieu of handing something out. You can post a sign at the entrance to your reception to let people know, and the amount can be as big or little as your budget allows.

We're doing cookies in personalized bags and then koozies as well. I feel non food gifts get left behind for the most part. PLUS intoxicated people+food=win

I think non edible is fine too if it's something I think I'd use. Otherwise if it's something like a shot glass or koozie it'll just be tossed aside

I came here just for this! I was wondering about favors, too. I was thinking whoopie pies ("whoopie! we got married!"), ground coffee ("the perfect blend" and/or "let love brew"), a self-serve candy bar with bags so they can take a treat home, or salt water taffy since we will be right up the street from the ocean/beach. I don't want anything chocolate because it will be hot in August in NH and we'll be outside.

I also like the idea of giving little jars of homemade jam made locally, so I may consider that as well.

Honestly, I've never used any traditional favors I've ever received, except a magnet.
