I don’t know about in person shops but online that’s definitely possible

So you order, try on & then send back if you don't like?

Absolutely possible! Check online (like Melle said, Azazie allows you to try on the dresses at home). Otherwise, check David's Bridal, they often have sales, or check a secondhand dress shop. Often times, pre-owned dresses have never even been worn, and may even still have their tags on. They could be from someone who purchased a dress, and then changed their mind and couldn't return it. Check for sample sales at local shops too. Another idea is to look for a white bridesmaid dress - they still are formal, but way cheaper than a wedding gown.

Have you tried BHLDN? I live in Houston too and they have a shop here. Their dresses are usually around the $1000 range or just slightly above. I think they also have that bohemian look that is good for beach weddings. Another option to look out for is trunk shows, where designers usually give a discount for new season dresses. I recently found "the" dress at a Justin Alexander trunk show for around $1200.

Also, the Rebecca Ingram line from Maggie Sottero tends to be a bit lower priced. When daughter bought her dress a few years ago, they topped out at $1200 for really beautiful dresses.

Check out boutique shops. Make a weekend of hitting every bridal store in your area until you find something you love. Also try on white bridesmaid and prom/quinceanera gowns.

Try Princess Bridal Off The Rack in Spring. Great prices on sample dresses.

I would definitely go into at least one or two shops first and try on different silhouettes, if you haven't already. Once you know which one you like, you can definitely look online. I got my dress from Stillwhite. Wide price range and gorgeous dresses. All are pre-owned but some have never been worn/tag still attached, like the one I purchased.

I would also recommend BHLDN. I had an in person appointment before covid, so I don't know how it's changed, but I had a great experience with them. My dress was not under $1000, but I tried on at least one that was, and it was one of the most comfortable things (not just wedding dresses) I've tried on. I'm pretty sure they're also still doing virtual appointments, which could make buying a dress online feel a little less risky.
