Wedding dress stuck in customs!?

Judi, on September 20, 2019 at 1:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

After several weeks of being told "your dress will be in on Friday" on the phone, I went to the store in person today. They said my dress is still in Customs. I don't even know if that is true, since every week the date changes. Wedding is three weeks from tomorrow. (and yes, I paid a $300 rush charge) Anybody got any ideas? Please help - nervous wreck.

Thanks!

It’s very possible, sometimes customs takes a long time.

I work for a global company & we do many shipments between the US, Canada & the EU. The most common cause when things are stuck in customs is the IOR or incoterm is wrong or the company didn’t assign a broker to handle the import (although it could be a host of things). What courier is it shipping from?

Thanks Kelly - this is super helpful! I ordered the dress at Macy's Herald Square. I am not sure, but I think it is coming in from China. I would imagine Macy's sells hundreds of Demetrios gowns per year at that location alone. I am going to call the manager now and ask these specific questions:

Who is the exporter? Was it shipped by air or vessel? On what day did it leave China? Is it the only item in the shipment or are there other dresses it shipped with? How long has it been in Customs?

Is there anything else you can think of that I can ask? I truly appreciate your help!!!

That is a good amount of questions. I would also ask who is the IOR (Importer of Record), and what incoterm it shipped on.

Definitely ask how long it's been in customs. UPS only "guarantees" holding items for 30 days.

That’s some great advice from Kelly, you should also see if they’re liable to refund you the rush charge.

My dress sadly also got stuck in customs. It was so frustrating. Mine came from the UK. Usually fedex and ups packaged do get stuck in customs. For some crazy reason usps doesn't and they let their packages. Just know i spent a lot of time with fedex and nothing could be done. I got it shipped back and thats when they tried usps and it went right through. Hope it all works out.

Oh my goodness Anna. Such unnecessary stress! My wedding is in 19 days so I am going back to Macy's and hope for better news today!
