Wedding dress shopping for the first time!

Jessica, on June 9, 2020 at 5:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 63

Hi guys,

It's official - my mom and I are going wedding dress shopping for the very first time this weekend. It's extra special, because when my mom got married, my grandmother was "too busy" working to attend her dress appointments. I know that hurt my mom quite a bit. I wanted my mom and I to have that moment together, just the two of us.

Anyway, I digress... I am ABSOLUTELY obsessed with this dress. It's Maggie Sottero's "Glorietta" gown. I just found out both wedding shops I'm visiting this weekend have it in-store.

What points of advice can you share?

- Should I try this dress on FIRST? Last?

- Did you end up with the dress you obsessed over on Pinterest?

All your thoughts and advice welcome!

Thanks in advance!!

That is a gorgeous gown. my advice would be to 100% try on all kinds of styles - you just never know what you may actually like.

I fell in love with a dress from Pinterest and loved it so much more on! Of course, things can look really different on so you never know. Just go with supportive people and an open mind!

I would try it on first!! When I found my dress every dress I tried on after couldn’t compete.

That's so great that you get to have this moment with your mom.
As for the dress I would personally try on a few dresses (like 2) before trying to the Pinterest one. That way you the pressure of that dress being the one you have been looking at is not stacked with the pressure it being the very first wedding dress you try on. Maybe try one of the same silhouette and one different.

I would start with trying on three different silhouettes, and if you still like the mermaid silhouette most after wearing it, then try on the pinterest dress. Then you won't be disappointed if you don't like the general look of it, since disappointed on the dream dress and the first dress could be a serious mood killer.

You're right, thanks! I'll try and stay open-minded for sure. I'm wondering if most people end up with the same silhouette they had imagined they would get prior to shopping!

It's beautiful!! I agree to try on a few different styles and then maybe try your dream dress last just to still have an open mind of what else you might like. I ended up with a completely different silhouette than I thought I wanted.

I wanted a detailed train but didn't end up with one cause all the detailing ended up being on top which is fine. I am absolutely in love with my dress and it was definitely a long road for me lol. I wish you all the luck. Have fun!!

I knew ahead of time that certain styles would look more flattering on my shape. I tried on one different silhouette just to be sure, and went right back to trying more A-line styles. I also knew that with a summer wedding, heavier/warmer fabrics like satin were a no-go. It'll be outdoors and feeling a train dragging behind me everywhere I walk would be a major distraction, so that ruled out a lot of dresses.

Definitely helps to at least have silhouette and season in mind so you won't be overwhelmed with options! Have fun!

I didn't end up with the same silhouette at all! i wanted something tight fitting like a mermaid and i ended up hating the way it looked on me so i went with an A line

Yes, I'm nervous I'm so glued to the idea of mermaid/trumpet. I will definitely stay open minded.

After this quarantine, I definitely dont have the same "figure" as I did before! Plot twist! and Pivot Smiley smile

    Thanks for your input!!

I fell in love with a dress looking at my bridal shop’s look book online before going to the store. I tried about 3 or 4 dresses before the consultant went to get in and I fell even more in love when I tried it on.

Try it in 1st or at least top 3! Sometimes the dress we want just isn’t meant for us. You certainly don’t want to leave it til the end and be disappointed. If you love it within the first three dresses, you’ll just be that much more excited about your shopping day. A few more dresses in and you’ll probably say, “Nope, I’m done. Let’s order The One!” 🎉
