Wedding Dress Seam

Nicole, on April 12, 2021 at 10:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

When I bought my dress it was a size 12 (no one told us that as a size 2-4 this would be a hard alteration) and I since lost weight and am now a size 0. Who I had alter my dress did an amazing job with getting it to fit to me without losing much of the design however...I am not happy with the side of the dress. Has anyone had their dress taken in at the side and had it look like this or should I take it back and ask for it to be fixed?

Bonus points if you know what I should say needs to be fixed😂

As a general rule of thumb, altering a dress by more/less than 2 sizes is difficult and not advised because it can completely change the dress (and sometimes can be more costly than just buying a brand new dress). There isn’t a photo attached so it is hard to say what the issue is with the seam. If you’re not happy with it, I would speak to the seamstress and ask if there is any way to change/conceal it better. They may explain to you that it’s not possible, or perhaps there is more you can do. You won’t know until you ask.

Take it to another seamstress to fix it

You’re right, this is a very noticeable seam! I would speak to your seamstress ASAP about what can be done to minimize it.

Now I see it, I gotcha.

I imagine that your issue is that obviously the material is not continuous (i.e. you can see the seam) but after such a significant alteration I personally don’t think there is really much of a way to improve it.

Agreed. I think such a visible seam is to be expected when altering the dress by six sizes and am not sure it can be fixed much. I think its fair to have a conversation with the seamstress about what you don't like, but don't be surprised if she says its a result of such a drastic size alteration and isn't able to remedy it.

I’m not a seamstress, but my dress had similar lace and needed to be taken in quite a bit. When the woman was doing it, she too the lace off and pinned the inner material and then put the lace back over so it looked continuous. I’m not sure I am explaining it well so maybe a seamstress could explain more...
