It all depends on your budget. A lot of people spend thousands on a dress. If you can't afford that, there are cheaper options. One of my bridesmaids is getting married in May and she found her wedding dress for $500 (it was a sample) and she just needs to pay a bit more for alterations.

I found my wedding dress on Etsy. It was under $400 for everything including shipping, taxes, etc. It is gorgeous and great quality. If you are worried about price, there are always options.

I bought a Lazaro ball gown, but my apparel costs (veil, alterations, jewelry, shoes, belt) was only 7% of our total budget (large).

One bride, on an internet board (and yes, I wish I would have copied it down), said she spent almost 9+k on her apparel and about the same amount to feed a large number of guests. WTH?

Mine was 900. Remember alterations have some weight too, my alterations are 400 for a sheath dress, but it's 500 for A line and 600 for ballgown. Usually the bigger the gown the more expensive alterations are.

My mom offered to pay for mine. She wanted to stay under $1k, the dress we both ended up loving is $1400... lol We didn't buy it yet, she's now decided under $1500-2k. Since that seems to be the price range of the ones we like most.

I paid $1700 for an Alfred Angelo lace A-line in 2011. This time I found a dress at David's Bridal for $200. My first wedding's budget was about $6,500. This time around I'm trying to keep it to $3,000. Both shopping experiences were in Connecticut.

I'm in Louisiana. My dress was $1,600. My mother graciously paid for my dress, and gave me a $3000 budget. Make sure to factor in any alterations - usually they are a couple of hundred dollars.

OP I am also in Alabama. I got mine at a small shop in Dothan for $1100. My mom was trying to find pictures of my dress, and found it in Birmingham and Atlanta for $3500. I have found that shopping local is best!

That would depend on your budget and how much you are willing to spend.

Mine was $4200 minus alterations, haven't even gotten it in yet. I know that's high for some people and it's definitely high for me but I just felt I wouldn't feel as amazing in anything else, it's the *one* time (hopefully) I will be wearing such a gown and my parents are super generous. I've seen people find amazing gowns for like $700. It always makes me scratch my head when people on shows like SYTTD get gowns that are $15k, 20k, even 30k. I think I saw one episode where the gown was so gaudy and ugly but she paid like $50k for it. What in God's name??? To each their own, I suppose.

Not sure your exact location but I first tried my dress on in NYC and it was $2500 ... tried (and bought) the same dress near my hometown (in the suburbs about 2 hours outside of the city) and it was $1900. Location matters!

It varies for each person, I would like to stay under 1000 including alterations but some people say their dress is the most important part and are willing to pay upwards if 20,000

It depends on the person. Over $150 would be too much for me. It's Vietnamese tradition to have three wedding dresses and $150 was my budget for all three TOTAL. So I got creative. Purchased the ceremony American wedding gown at Goodwill (treasure find!) for (with dry cleaning and minor alterations) $33.28. The other two will be Vietnamese ao dais, designed by me and custom made in my hometown in Vietnam when we visit in March; expected price for fabric and labor (after conversion), $100. Total cost for all three wedding dresses, $138.28.
