Wedding dress conundrum: tall bride edition

Caryn, on July 12, 2019 at 11:57 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17
I'm 5'9" and I want to give myself as much time as possible to lose weight before buying a dress; however, when I've gone to try on dresses to get ideas, they've tried to pressure me into buying ASAP, because I will need extra length and the dress will have to be special ordered, which could take over 6 months to come in. My question is: do I REALLY need extra length? I'm including some pictures for reference. While some of the dresses are plenty long, others are almost an inch off the floor. I will be wearing ballet flats, so there won't be much difference in my height on the wedding day.

If you're wearing ballet flats, I think you are totally fine as is!

I agree. Bring your flats with you so they can see.

Dresses do take 6-9 months to arrive (mine took 8). You can order the size you measure at now and take in up to 2 dress sizes when you lose the weight. 👍

None of the dresses you showed us would need extra length imo. Why? So you can pay to have it hacked off again because it's too long? Nope. Sounds like you're getting the hard sell, for no other reason than someone wants a fat commission.

Any of those dresses will work as-is, in terms of length. Really pretty btw!

I agree, the dresses are a fine length if you're wearing flats. If you're doing heels though, especially on that last one, I think a little extra length should be considered Smiley smile

All those dresses look fine to me as far as length. I feel the dress length pain too though! I’m 5’8” but luckily my dress will actually need to be made shorter as the previous person wore super high heels and I’ll be wearing Toms.

Thanks everyone! It helps to know I'm not crazy. Now I'll just have to pick a dress and some really cute shoes that I don't mind people seeing! Lol

I'm really surprised they're telling you you'd need extra length. I'm 5'8" and all the dresses I tried on were plenty long enough - I actually just had about 3-4" of the bottom of my dress chopped off yesterday at my alterations appointment. Unless you're planning on wearing crazy high heels I can't imagine you'd really need extra length.

Dresses do take a while to come in if being ordered. I bought mine in January and it didn't come in until May, but as far as the extra length I think these are fine because you don't want your dress to drag the ground and get torn or dirty.

I think the dresses you showed are perfectly fine without added length. If nothing else, this is great because you'll be far less likely to trip.

Also, I feel your pain on tall girl problem. It's a good think I'm making my dress. I'm 5'11"!

I am running into the same issue because we're the same height. Your dress looks long enough, especially if you're wearing flats. I'm going for measurements tomorrow and I'm going back and forth with myself if I actually need the costly extra length.

I think your dresses look great! The shop I bought my dress said my designer makes dresses for people who are 5’9” so with flats I think it will be perfect! Love the first dress on you!

If you are wearing flats and are comfortable with people seeing your shoes I would order them as is! That's pretty much where I would like my dress and I'm super short so I can send you some of my fabric they take off if you need it!

I think I'm going to order them at standard length. I bought some simple navy blue suede flats so they're pretty enough to be seen, but dark enough that you might not even notice them.
