Wedding dress cleaning/preservation

Hi, if you’ve already gotten married, did you clean your dress? I’m looking for advice as to how to do it or what service to use.

I have seen some YouTube videos where the brides did it themselves at home. Has anyone here done or tried it?
Or have any of you sent your dress off for cleaning? What service did you use, and were you satisfied?
I’ve been researching, and most of the services I’m finding offer cleaning and preservation for $200-$300, but then it’s sealed in a box...I think I’d want to know how the cleaning went.
Anyway, thanks for any advice you may have!

I mailed mine off through David's Bridal's service. It does come back to you in a box, but it's clear on the front. I had strawberry pie spilled ALL over my dress at the wedding (big pink streaks) and you could tell from the window in the box that the stains are gone.

I had mine cleaned and preserved through Davids. It was $160 and you ship it to Texas and then they ship it back to you. I was happy with it. It’s sealed but I don’t plan on opening it again for a long long time anyway.

I think I’m going to go with David’s, as right now it’s $99. I know myself though, I know I’ll eventually open it to see if it’s really clean. I know all these services advise against opening the box. But really, what’s the harm?? Anyone ever open the sealed box?

I haven't - but they warn against it because the dress can start to yellow. If you'll NEVER need it again for anything, then no big deal. If you think you want to save it for if you have a little girl or for a christening outfit or whatever then you want to make sure to keep it "white" which means leaving it in the box.

Having said that - my parents got married in 1972. My mom never had her dress and veil cleaned or preserved. She donated the dress (definitely didn't want that, it was very lacy and very 1972) but I wore her veil (I had to have it taken off of a HUGE headband lol). It was not yellow and it was still soft.

Interesting. My mother also did nothing to preserve her gown (from 1972.). It hung in her closet for over 30 years, and it did turn yellow.

I’m thinking if I do open it, I’ll first buy a different box (thinking fosters and Stevens) so I can transfer the dress after the fact. Or maybe I’ll just leave it. For awhile anyway. 😂
