Wedding dress alterations

Andrea, on May 24, 2020 at 9:55 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
So like most getting married this year, our original wedding plans for Aug 30 got scrapped. We are still planning a small ceremony and reception for the 30th and I am planning on wearing my dress. I also would like to wear my dress next year when we do our large reception with the rest of our guests. Should I hold off on alterations till next year, and just wear my dress as is? Last time I had it on it fit fine but i am short so it definitely needs to be hemed. I just don't wanna pay for multiple alterations, same for my bridesmaids. My maid of honor is pregnant. I dont wanna make her take the dress out this year and then take it in next year. How are others handling this with wearing their dresses twice? Thanks!

I would at minimum have the bustle put in and have it hemmed now, because if you wear it while it’s too long it could cause damage to the bottom that would cost even more to try and fix and/or clean. If it’s otherwise a pretty good fit, then waiting til next year to alter through the bodice should be ok!

I second Kate. Your height will more than likely not change, so I would go ahead and get the hemming done. Then you can take it back to adjust the bodice if you want.

    Agree with PP's!

As far as your bridesmaid goes, that's a really tough situation. It'll probably depend on how pregnant she is? An adjustment for showing a little bit won't be huge, but adjusting for 8 mos. pregnant would be a huge difference.

Thank you everyone for your advice! I will definitely be getting my dress hemed for my ceremony this year. As for my bridesmaids, my MOH will be about 6 or 7 months pregnant by the ceremony this year. She did order her dress a size up, she didn't know she was pregnant at the time but the dress is really flowey so she wanted to make sure it was loose. However, another one of my bridesmaids decided to order her dress a size smaller cause she was planning on losing weight and she hasn't since the pandemic started. So it will be interesting when the dresses come in. I told my girls i am not forcing them to wear the dresses this year given the circumstances. They can just wear them next year to the larger celebration.
