Wedding Dress Alterations timeline

HappilyMrs.Kemp, on June 20, 2016 at 12:33 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

I purchased my dress from David's Bridal back in mid-March and they informed me it is set to arrive around August 15th (eek!). My wedding date is October 1, 2016. Since it's cutting it so close to give enough time for alterations to be done, should I call ahead now and try to get an appointment now to make sure a slot is available in August? I will be going through an independent seamstress, not DB, so I'm worried about the issue of manpower and if the seamstress is only able to take so many dresses at a time. I'm not clear on the etiquette around alterations. Help!

DB told me that my dress would take 3 months to come in and it actually came in 3 weeks. DB usually gives the worst case scenario for shipping times. Hopefully you will get it earlier so you won't have to worry.

I would suggest making an appointment with someone now, because I'm all about better safe than sorry!! But Heather is correct normally at David's you get a worst case/farthest date possibility! I used to work there and dresses came in early all the time!

I was told in March that mine would come in June... less than a month later they were calling for me to pick it up (and I'm almost 3 hrs away) I wasn't happy lol I'm doing my alterations elsewhere too but my seamstress is away until mid July for my Aug wedding. She assures me that it will be plenty of time. I sure hope she knows what she's talking about lol

I'd call your seamstress and book your first appt now, for when your dress should be here. You'll be good to go that way!

Yes. Make an appointment NOW. I would make it for around Aug 20. Depending on the alterations you need will determine how far ahead you'll need the first fitting. 6 weeks out is pretty standard for a first fitting I believe.

Great, that makes me feel a little better about hopefully receiving it early! My bridesmaids received their dresses early from DB, but only a couple of weeks early and I figured it was just because their dresses were pretty simple. Mine on the other hand is pretty detailed, so it was worrying me a little bit.

I will definitely call now to make my appointment then. Thanks so much everyone!! Smiley smile
